I have never owned a house. I have always rented and that is going on 17 years. While some may say I have thrown away money, with the recent housing crisis I may actually be ahead by not losing any value in a house. Also, renting enables me to be more mobile for work, etc. I also am not responsible for much of the maintenance if something goes wrong. I think owning a house is a big responsibility that I do not want to spend the time on. That is a personal value trait as I would rather work or spend time with family than paint shutters or mow the lawn. |

Owning a house is not renting by any means. Yes you make like payments but at the end you own it. You have something tangible besides rent receipts. That's one way to have something later in life and it's as good as $ in the bank. |

By "own" do you mean own it outright? Cuz, most people have a mortgage which is really just renting the house from the bank. |
