Do you wish house prices crush by 50% next year?
So you can get on the housing ladder

You seem to forgetting the fact that it would mean most Americans would be broke, something like that would destroy the economy.

Why would you wish that millions of people would loose so much on their investments? There are many people that have one investment, their house, and they are counting on it for their retirement.

This would lead to not simply homelessness, but the homelessness to many seniors and people who can not recover from this.

If this happens in 10 years, when I plan to retire, I actually would not be able to retire, I would not have any money.

Yep!! thats not a good idea!! Think of all that negative equity out there if that happened, and with recession hitting normal families - there is bound to be an increase in repossessions. Then the banks will sell the repossessed houses for a loss, increasing the problems within the credit market - tightening credit even more.... making it harder for first time buyers to get on the market.

This is happening now - but if there was a 50% drop in house prices, it would near as damn it impossible for you to get a mortgage unless you had very high % deposit.

Anyways, good luck in your search and have a very merry christmas.... and in the future be careful what you wish for.... it just may come true.

Cheers

John.

I'm not wishing for a crash as I have £10k of my own money tied up in my flat. You can get on the property ladder even I did. I Left London 3 yeas ago for the North I had £0 in the bank and no job. I brought my 3 bed flat last year for just less than £95K. It's bloody hard work and we had to live on one person's wage £850ish Per month for a year as we were saving the rest fortunately we did get a job but only after 3 months of temping. We were still only earning less than £14,000 each. We basically did things on the super cheap, Ditched the car, shopped in Netto and hardly went out. I brought at the wrong time but wasn't to know at the time so very nervous about the future.

No - this is a dip, not a crash.
They should start to recover in the meantime.
If prices were to fall much more people simply wouldn't sell them. Something which is already happening. So they won't drop much more.

Barclay's boss has said that house price may fall 30% from its peak of summer 2007. Which also means that his bank may also starts its mortgage lending. I take it that house price will also pick up in price as more people will have access for mortgages to buy houses.

Doctor Deth
house prices have already dropped that much in some areas - the decreases are supposed to finally slow down and hit bottom next year

RaysBack
Well that is one way to look at it

Yes. We will be able to buy 3 houses. That will pay for retirement when prices go up in 15 years..

As for someone looking and trying to buy a home , this would be great. However the biggest problem people have in home buying is the closing cost and down payment. Most people can afford the monthly payment..including taxes amd insurance. Its just getting money saved to get the loan.

infinite crisis 247
truthfully that happening helps nobody. it doesn't help existing homeowners who lose equity in their homes. this means that eventually fewer people sell, meaning less supply.

right now, it's a buyer's market and very good prices for first time homebuyers. the thing is that it's harder to get approved for loans, so if you have dings on your credit, you are much less likely to get approved. you also must have much higher down payment amounts than you used to have to bring.
