Yes they do, end of day their property has to be safe. Mine was replaced a few months back because the lock had broekn aswell as the key being a pain. Give it a go. |

Don't think so. The council charge you if it is a council house so I would think housing association would have the same rules. It costs about £50 |

Why do people who rent property always expect their landlord to pay for everything. You may have difficulty in proving it was not your fault, particularly if it happened after 10 pm. |

I don't know, however I keep a pair Long nose Pliers in my pick-up-truck, if a key does break in the lock, I just pull it out with the pliers.
For 2 and 3 lever locks it gets a bit more tricky, this involves a small but powerful magnet to be inserted into key hole to retrieve break-off, then you get the code off the shaft and pop in to any iron monger / hardware store and ask for a replacement key, it is cheaper than getting the locks changed. |

Well, for openers, I've never seen one of these associations do much more than rattle my nerves. I'd be hard pressed to believe that they'd cover the bill on that.
Also, I noticed that one of the answers you got included using a "powerful magnet" to extract the broken piece of the key from the lock. Sorry... ain't gonna work. I was a locksmith for well over 18 years and they don't make keys that are magnetic anymore, with the only exception being a steel key for warded padlock. All keys are made from either brass or nickel-silver, BOTH of which are NON-MAGNETIC.
Personally, if I were you, I'd go buy a cheap little lockset from your local hardware store (around $20) and replace the one that gave you the broken key, or call a local locksmith to have the broken key removed. Generally, they'll hook you up with a replacement key as well. |
