I just renewed my contract, and they told me that the rent was being raised because of the market. Also, the said that they sent a letter, as a 'courtesy', to let some tenants know the rent was raised. Please help me! This is in Cedar Falls, IA. |

Yes, they needed to mail out that letter 30 days before the rent raised.
If you did not get it, and they believe that, then you have another 30 days before it goes up. |

Depends on what your agreement says. Typically they have to give you a 30 day notice before a rate increase... so that you may give notice to vacate if you should decide to leave. |

Any landlord MUST notify prior to payment that the rent has been raised to allow you to opt-out of your rent.
That's like saying I raised it from $200 to $800 and just decided not to let you know. |

Yes they should notify you. Was the new price on the renewal you signed? If it was then that serves as your notification and you are stuck. |

What they did is proper. When a contract is up for renewal, they can change the rent. If you signed the contract with the new rental rate listed, then you are obligated to pay it. They don't even have to send a letter. |

They can't raise the rent arbitraily. Unless the provisions of the written lease permit them to raise the rent, it can't be done until the lease expires and then you have the option of paying more moving out.
