Does a landlord have the right to evict just on the basis of not having a set of keys to the apartment?

Absolutely not.....

Sure a landlord can move to evict, if you changed the locks and refuse to give the landlord a set of keys, they must have access to the unit for emergency or other reason outlined in the lease for access to the unit

Elsa D
Yes, it is illegal to bar the owner, or their rep, access to their own property.

It will be a hands down eviction.

Ginger R
Did you try just giving the landlord a set of keys?

Patrick
Look at your lease. If it states in there that you are not allowed to change the locks then that's what it means. If you did change the locks you violated the lease. You can be evicted for violating any part of the lease.

many landlords will overlook the violation if they are given a set of keys to the premises. If you refuse to give the keys the landlord could evict on the basis of you violating the lease.

Yes, they own the property and the house.
You are simply the current tennant. They have the right to inspect your house at anytime as long as they give reasonable notice.

Reasonable notice is different in most states. Some states allow a phone call a few minutes prior to entry some require two days.

You can research landlord and tennent law by checking out your states Secretary of State website.

Good LUCK!

Absolutely, if you change the locks on an apartment and don't give the landlord a key you are likely violating your lease agreement, which almost always gives the landlord permission to enter. Violating the terms of the lease=eviction. They have every right to have a key, they own the place, you are essentially borrowing the property for a fee.

With a 30 day written notice a landlord can evict and they don't have to give you a reason. Even if you have always paid on time and caused no problem. If you changed lock, you were probably in violation of your lease.

The landlord owns the property.... he/she must have keys in the event of an emergency as per your lease/contract,.., they can evict for breaking the contact/lease.

my maintenance people are notorious for "looking" into people's houses.

So I changed the deadbolts.

Funny how no one noticed until they tried to get in. My state law--The Landlord-Tenant Housing Act. says they must give notice to enter, or have an emergency.

There was no emergency. And they didn't give notice. They were just being nosy.

They wanted the keys, and I said "NO". However, under the law I am required to give them access on reasonable demand. And I said I will. I'm not trying to violate my lease.

HOWEVER, in case of an emergency, they may break my door down, and I'll pay for it. But they'd better show me proof of the emergency.

Sure I rent. Sure, they own it. BUT as a renter, I own that apartment and have privacy rights. They are also bound by the law, They don't need keys if they have access on demand.

google "your state" and landlord tenant laws. Some states really don't care and give you NO protection. Some do.
