Does anyone worry about the next generation and how they will be able to afford a home to buy?
I have a 15 yr old daughter and a 9 year old son. I cannot for the life of me imagine how they will ever be able to buy a home until i die and leave them mine. Even if they get a 'good' job and earn 20k when they are starting out (daughter planning to go to uni) - what could they possibly buy - 3 x salary 60k - maybe a garage in a 'not so good area' - what will happen to our children - will they just rent houses or flats from the generation before them? Or will they all get jobseekers allowance as no-one who is not on a massive salary can afford to live without some kind of handout? I saw a project in notting hill for key workers to help them buy a house and the criteria for the help was that you earned less than 60k a year - something a lot of people dream of???

I think this argument has been debated down through the ages. When my grandparents purchased their first home for $8,500 they were complaining about the cost and the monthly payments.

When my father purchased his home we were in awe of the price and monthly mortgage he was required to pay.

Now go back to my grandparents and look at the salary those people were making at the time and compare the salaries we are earning today.

The solution to the problem is education so they can earn a top salary thus be in a position to purchase a good home in a nice neighborhood.

This is what we tried to instill in our children. We took them to poor areas of our city, then to people with a college education as well as those that did not have a college education.

We spoke with all types of people to include those that were in trade professions that required a trade tech school as oppose to a formal college education.

Our children came out fairly well, there is one we are concerned about, but you can only take them to the water, you can not make them drink.

You have to position them as much as you can to be successful in whatever they do and want to accomplish.

I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

all the foreigners will own the council properties because they have more kids than uk career minded people and their kids will do the same breed like dogs and never put any money, tax or help into this country just drain the funds of any benefits they can till they are dry. its the people who let them into the country who are to blame, the uk is now just a dustbin for europe every scrounger heads here because they are looked after better than british citizens so who can blame them.

Yes i worry.... i have two children still living at home aged 25 and 27.
they can't get a council property and don't earn enough to get a mortgage, that will put a roof over their head.
They have always worked and don't earn bad salaries but unless something is done soon I'm afraid they will be still living here when they are a lot older.

Yeah it will be a big issue. One way is for parents to own their own home to pass on to their children.

There are a lot of new modern ways to get into home ownership these days that can help those in the future. Vendor financed homes is one way. And Rent To Own homes or Rent To Buy is what they are known as in the states, they help renters break out of the rental rut. So I'm sure the market will move to cater for the changing housing environment.

I’m not in the UK but no, I don’t worry about it at all.

Home prices are always 100% dictated by why buyers are able and willing to pay. They’re not arbitrarily set like other consumer goods. If everyone made such a small salary, home prices would come down to meet that income level.

I'm in the same position as you babe, my daughter is 14 and my son is 13. I can see them living with us for many, many years to come. that in itself isnt a problem, but i cant help but think its not a good thing for many reasons. I lived with my hubby and his mum until we could afford to move out and i can see my kids having to do the same. I dont think my house is big enough !!!!

I am not worried, home prices will always revert back to an affordable price range. If few can afford a house, then the prices will drop as they are doing right now in the US and other places in the world. As long as your children are responsible, stay out of debt, and work hard to save, then they will have a roof over their heads. Sometimes it is simply a matter of doing those things a bit better than the others, and they will live a more comfortable life than most.

I think a lot of folks put too much emphasis on how much one can make in a year. Whether it be 50k or 100k, the real measure of success is how well you manage your money. Teach them financial literacy, and they will be light years ahead.

Most college graduates in the USA other than liberal arts degree, start at 50k and up. If you teach your children how to responsibly handle money, they will thrive. They must learn that savings come first. A used car with no car loan is better. If they need it they pay cash and not charge every day items. Both my children own their own homes.
Neither one carries a monthly charge card debt. If you want it bad enough you will manage.

Are you seriously asking this question???

I think the problem with the question, is the person asking it. You need to understand that we live in a society that believes something should be given for nothing.

I would suggest that your 15 yr old daughter:
1. Go to college.
2. Have higher expectations than making 20k per year, starting out with an employer.
3. Just work on getting herself established, than worrying about home ownership.

Everything should apply to your son as well.

You have to keep in mind, that around 20 years or so ago first timehome buyerss needed at least 20% down. Otherwise, they were renting.

But because of political and economic pressures, the banking industry allowed anyone with a pulse to buy a home. Furthermore, they allowed people that could operate a "fry machine", at 50% effectiveness become a mortgage lender.

When all the dust settles, you'll have professionals once again within the mortgage industry. You will have the next generation, hopefully learning from there parents mistakes. And you will have them living a prosperous life.

Again, just my opinion.
