Does having a pitbull next door make your house harder to sell?
We don't have a fence between our yards. The dog is in a large fenced cage.
Additional Details
Pitbulls are not banned in MI. We are not allowed to put up a fence.

Landlord
Yes, of course. There is a dangerous animal next door. It might escape and kill someone. Most normal people would not want to subject themselves to that kind of threat.

I wouldnt buy your house knowing a pitbul is my neighbor

Yes it will depreciate the value of your house.

I wouldn't buy it with a pitbull next door, and no fence. I would be nervous for myself, and worried sick about children and pets we may wish to keep. I wouldn't want them to become lunch.

WelshLad
I think it would put me off, especially no fence.

Ed Atun
I didn't buy a house because the neighbor had 7 dogs. They made a racket all day; even with a fence.
Could you ask the neighbor if you could invite the dog to your house for all showings? If the dog is sweet, it would be great for potential buyers to see a sweet dog playing with kids.... rather than a silent dog in a cage.

yes, everyone hates loud a$$ and vicious barking dogs.

This has nothing to do with your question, but my name is also amanda d and I also have a pit bull living next door (but she is very nice). ^.^

I thought this breed of dog was banned.

I don't have anything against that actual breed of dog, but I would not want to live next door to any dog if it were annoying (that would be a bigger problem than being vicious, you know like if it constantly barked loudly). The trouble is that many dogs are annoying for the simple reason that they are sociable animals but their owners leave them unattended for too long at a time, meaning that they get bored and therefore bark loudly or get into trouble.

If you really feel that it is a problem, there are two things that you might want to consider:
- Why not build a fence? It shouldn't cost too much and you should be able to do it in a day. If there are restrictions in your area that mean that you can't do this, then as a potential buyer, it would be this rather than the dog that would put me off.
- If he is barking loudly, perhaps have a word with your neighbour and ask if they could keep in quiet whilst there are viewings in place. Obviously this won't be possible all the time though.

However, I think you really need to remember that very few houses are selling at the moment, and I guarantee you that whatever people's thoughts on pitbulls are, this is not the sole reason for yours not selling.

It shouldn't have any affect at all on the sale of your house. You don't need to disclose anything about your neighbors anyway. The new folks can always put up a fence if they feel more secure. I would worry only if I had small children. As long as the dog is in a cage, he is fine. I hope it's big enough for him to walk around!
Good luck selling your house!

I personally would not have a problem with it.
Pit Bulls are VERY people friendly dogs. To assume that it is "vicious" is very unfair to the dog.
Do you know the neighbors and their dog? If so, you can explain to possible buyers that the dog is friendly and never causes a problem. With the dog owner's permission, you could tell people that they are welcome to meet him/her (as long as he/she is, in fact, a friendly dog).
Also, Pit Bulls are have been banned from few places. However, please consider the fact that Breed Specific Legislation is discrimination. 9 times out of 10, its the owner who is bad, not the dog.

Edit:
Landlord: when did anyone say the dog was mean? You're answer of "There is a dangerous animal next door. It might escape and kill someone." is the retarded thinking that gets good dogs bad reputations. Don't assume things.
