If your landlord will not supply your flat with a smoke alarm, even if he should, you ought to get one yourself. They are cheap enough ( about £5 ) and it is your safety at risk if you don't have an alarm. Buy the alarm and ask for a rebate, if your landlord refuses at least you will have an alarm and some peace of mind.
At some stage in your life you will realise that you have to look after yourself sometimes and not rely on someone else to tuck you in at night every time you go to bed. |

Yes, if he doesn't want to be heavily penalized for fire code violations. An even better way to ensure your safety in case of a fire:
(1) Renter's Insurance
(2) Look for apartments with a sprinkler system installed
(3) Invest in a Carbon monoxide detector |

I researched this last year and apparently not, only in HMO which would be bedsits not flats. However it would be in his best interests to do so as not only is he showing care for you but also his building.
They are cheap enough but I guess it's the principle really. However you can ask your local fire brigade and they will come and fit some for you for free. |

It depends on your state and local government, but in most places YES, check with city or county zoning office or your local fire department they will know for sure |

Not only does he/she have to provide and install, he/she have to provide a carbon monoxide detector. |

Here in the states the law varies from state to state. In Colorado I believe that all apartment buildings need to be provided with atleast one detector per bedroom and one in the kitchen. It would be in the landlords best interest to provide one, but I would just rely on yourself to go get one as they arent terribly expensive. |

I have been a super intendant in an apparment complexe for the last few years and yes it is the responsibility of the landloard to make sure all fire and gas alarms where the appartment is heated with natural gas are properly working and inspected atleast once a year from a fire inspector. Also if the building has more than two floors there should be one big fire extinguisher per floor and a clean and unrestricted fire escape. For your own piece of mind just call you local city hall and ask about local fire alarm bi-laws and you will get all the information you are looking for..good luck |

Yes he does - its tenancy law that he provides you with smoke alarms and carbon monixide detectors |

definitely yes- however if he won't buy them, think of your own safety and get some now. don't waste time arguing, they're not that expensive to buy, get a receipt and deduct it from his rent. |
