mari93 | Even if you had a beautiful home, would you move if the schools were not that good? |
I live in a 4,000 square feet beautiful home in a town where the schools are not that great and we are paying a whole lot of taxes. We just received a letter from the board of education that our school district will ony get a 2% amount of money toward the school whereas all the other districts will receive at least between 10%-20% increase. Our schools are in a bad need of upgrades and new technology and this town can be so backwards at time. My husband likes it here because of the diverse types of socioeconomics of people and he is not too crazy in moving to a more afluent town. I guess he does not want to end in a snobby type of town. I would rather down grade and move to a better town with better schools. Any advice? |

Personally I would move.
A house is just a building, but your childrens education, good or bad, stays with them for life.
Your children will benefit much more in a smaller home but in a great school district.
Also, personally I am one of the snobs when it comes to my children. I see no benefit from them associating with children from families that do not value a high education and high moral ethics. |

I would move if my children were school age, but areas with good schools help hold real estate values. |

Do you know that the schools are "bad". Just because someone says they are, doesn't mean they are. They could have been bad years ago (or good), but the rep will follow the school for years.
I would visit the schools and see for yourself. Test scores ARE NOT always the best way to judge a school. What type of programs do they offer.
If you have average kids, then a good school is more inportant then if your kid is above average. Most schools have gifted programs.
I live in the DC metro area. Our county has some of the best top 10 schools IN THE COUNTRY. And the overall system is in the top 5 in the country. However, there are good and bad schools. In the very good schools, the income level is high and these people actually send their kids to private schools.
If your current schools are average, I wouldn't move to a higher price area - NOT WITHOUT RESEARCH. Don't assume anything.
What is 200% important in a kids education is how much the parents are involved. NO MATTER WHERE THEY GO TO SCHOOL.
Your husband is right about moving to a "rich" area. Your kids will always be trying to keep up with the jones (ie cars, clothes, etc).
I would also find out why your school district is only getting a bit of what they "deserve". There may be other moneies that they get. In MD, Baltimore gets more then any other district in Maryland. However, they have the worst schools.
If your schools ARE getting cheated, then fight, fight, fight. |

Sorry u are buying into a fallacy.
what ur kids do in school is dependent on they desires and ur ability to help them.
some of the most successful people have grown up in some of the worst places.
5 yrs after trade / college schools - no one cares where u went only what can u produce.
u can supplement ur kids education at home for thousand s less than moving at a better return on investment.
u want better schools - run for school board . organize upset parents . raise funds. vote the idiots out. |

No matter where you will move you will find something that is wrong with a school it is normal
The only why to avoid that is to send your child to a private school Catholic is one if you belong.
Taxes being high is one that all America is being plagued with and not seeing the returns for
Home schooling has become a protection for a child not just a way to insure a better education if the parent has the ability
But down grading to go to a better school will be regretted by you in
the security of the area you move to will always be in jeopardy if you have lived in a protected residential area
Consisting of regular police patrol not just when something happens.
So you do not stand alone in the sub standard American education system
Just read the news paper
How many engineer degree's does China have each year?? Compared to the United States |

If the kids are doing fine, don't move. If your kids start getting into gangs, smoking weed, or not getting good grades, yank them and go to affluent part of town.
I am just the opposite, I live in a small home where there is good schools. |

I would move, epically if I'm paying a lot of taxes for my kids to get a education. GOOD LUCK! |
