Fish tanks in a rented property?
Myself and my girlfriend are currently viewing propertys in the UK to move in to. They all say NO PETS but does this count for fish tanks?

No, fish tanks do not fall under the "no pets" specification. The reason being that fish do not soil and make noise etc...if in doubt ask but in my experience this does not cover fish. Fish tanks are classed as ornamental things. You could have an aquatic plant aquarium with no actual fish in it and that would be allowed, so the fish themselves make very little difference, you see what I mean?.
As the person above says, assuming it's one modest tank and not a huge aquatic set-up.

As a landlord in the U.S., I don't generally allow pets. Though I would let a tenant have an aquarium. But, if we're talking multiple aquariums, then I would start to worry if water and electric were included in the rent. (Filters, Heaters, Water Pumps, Lighting, Etc..)

Depends on the landlord and the size of the aquarium. Best to ask before doing.

That will depend on the landlord. Fish are not going to cause any damage, but a tank full of water would if there were a leak or an accident where the tank was smashed. The water would cause a lot of damage. Before you set one up, ask.

Craig T
It can. If you are talking about a small fish tank likely there is no problem but if you are talking about a large aquarium of say 75-100 gallons or more than yes that would fall under the no pets.

Best thing is to ask the landlord and NOT Yahoo Answers

I would ask the landlord before moving your fish in. If you have a mishap with the fish tank and it leaks or falls over or some other bizarre thing happens, you are going to be liable for the water damage. Also, this would really be a big mess if you were in an apt and people lived below you and your fish tank.

most people here are correct. ask before you set it up, because the big x factor is how big the tank is. if the lease does not allow any pets and you assume that it's ok, well you have just given the landlord a convenient excuse to evict you.

Nah coz they only say no pets if the property can become damaged by them. Unless ur fish can piss up walls then you ok.

Technically they would count as a pet, you'd have to ask your landlord (or look at the fineprint of the contact) for specifics. I don't see how it would be much of a problem - they don't make an awful lot of noise, and whilst they can be messy it is all very well contained!

The only reason I could see them reasonably objecting to a fish tank would be the possibility of water damage (even then its not reasonable).
