Food costs a month?
I've never lived on my own but this summer me and my bf are gunna rent a studio apartment in cali and I was just wondering how much peope would think food costs would be monthly for two people like a min and max price. thanks

this is really hard to answer because we have no idea of what you guys eat. food prices vary greatly depending on what quality you buy and what you buy.

for example: people who eat at McDonald's everyday.

breakfast: $3.50 mcmuffin and coffee
lunch 5.50 # 1 meal
dinner 6.00 # 5 meal
--------------------------
$ 15.00 per day per person or $450.00 per month
so that would be about $900.00 for a couple.

if you make your own food...this is where its hard to know without info on what you eat...but here is an example

breakfast $ .99 eegs, hashbrowns, coffee.
lunch $3.00 beef burrito,water
dinner $ 3.00 pasta
-----------------------------------
$7.00 per person per day or $217 per month

thats $434 for both of you.

now what if you want to eat better food....well...the sky is the limit.

My spouse and I usually spend about $100/week for food for the two of us (so, $400/mo). However, if you are tight on cash, you can clip coupons and buy food on sale, and you can probably spend less than that.

Well per diem in California is $38 a day. That is supposed to cover 3 meals but in my experience, it doesn't.

It would depend on how often you eat out, where you shop, the cost of living in that town or city, etc. I would figure $40/per person (food and drinks) a day as long as you stay on budget and pay attention to your expenses.

200-250 less if you just want to live on ramen and potatoes, no fresh veggies or fruit. More if you want higher end things, soda, snacks, meat.

Depends on where in Cali, and how you want to eat.

If I go to the grocery store and go for minimum cost, but alot of food(microwave burrito's, junk like that) about $20-$25 a week for myself only.

I've moved away from that type of food, and buy meats and veggies, and regular food, and it's about $35-$45 a week depending on what I get.

Depends on if this is just groceries or you are counting meals out. But anywhere from $300-$500 is a good estimate.

First off, I have to go on the record saying it's a horrible idea to live with your boyfriend - especially because you've never lived on your own.

About the food - It's easy to figure out a grocery store budget, but you'll probably eat out more than you ever imagined, and that can add up fast. And don't forget how much guys eat! It's crazy. I think you should plan on $30 for yourself per week, and $50 - $60 for your bf per week.

Jojo
you and your friend just 100 to 150

I live in portland oregon with my bf and we average out about 300, give or take. But we never eat out and I cook everything. It saves alot of money that way. We do go out for drinks about 3 times a month. Hope that helps , I know the cost of living is significantly higher in california.

I live in Canada, and me and my boyfriend usually spend about $100-$160 every two weeks (We go every pay day) we mostly stock up on Veg, Fruit, Meats, and canned goods, pasta, we dont snack or buy pop and more exspensive things like that...
this is also including toiletries, laundry soap, light bulbs all that kinda stuff.

Well, you have to factor in more than that.

Food
Toiletries
Pet Food
Medicines
Beauty Products
Paper Products
Cleaning Products

These all add up fast. $400.00 is average for 2 people depending on where you live, if you plan to cook at home...

ViolinMaster#1
minimum = $75.00 Maximum = $150.00.....If you eat at a restaurant daily however, the range might be from 90 to 170

Well...Min being ramen for every meal, $30. Med, being regular, probably $300. Max, around $600.

irishbarfight
It depends on food prices for your area, and..more importantly, how expensive are your tastes (pun/no pun intended). I'd factor in about $150-$200 a month, just to be safe.

85-150 a month

Depends on what you eat... I spend about $100 everytime I go to the grocery store, about once a week, for me and my hubby. So $400 a month if you don't eat out. If you do eat out (and when we lived in LA we ate out almost everyday) we spent about $1500 a month on restaurants.

emmyanderson
for just yourself...it would be a lot cheaper if you make and cook your own food. Depends on how much you want to go out and what type of food you eat alot. I would say for a month at least 200 or so~

chumpyme
Knowing what you WANT to spend helps. Make a budget and stick to it. For two I'd budget in $75 a week minimum. Stock up on your staples, and then spend the rest of fresh fruits, veggies, and meat. Good luck, you.

wooooooow?
