hi everyone. i am currently renting a home, and when i first moved in.....my lease agreement states that i am responsible for the water bill. however there was a broken sprinkler head in my front yard which took my landlord 5 to 6 months to fix. in the meantime my water bill which was in my name ran up to 1,000 dollars. the landlord finally fixed it, and transferred the water bill to his name. however he does not, and refuses to pay the bill. now my water is cut off, and i have two small children. i do not have the money to up and move right away. what should i do? i could take him to court but the process is long. by the way it is a section 8 home. can i report him to section 8 and will they allow me to break my lease and move?

p.s. there are also other things he neglects. for instance my garbage disposal is broken, he doesnt cut the yard or upkeep the lawn, and my upstairs toilet doesnt flush. when i tell him about these things, he just says "oh i'll come by and fix it" but he never does. |

yes you report to section 8 as that is where he gets the rent from in whole or in part and see what they say |

This is a health issue, so report him to your local Section 8 office.

You need to report this and all other needed repairs to Section 8. They will send out an inspector and then send him a warning to get it done or they will withhold the rent. Any landlord is required to keep the property in good working order & Section 8 is good about enforcing that for their tenants. |

You need to report him to your section 8 Hud office. He is an irresponsible landlord and should not be allowed to receive funding for not providing livable housing conditions. He is collecting his money and doing nothing in the meantime. Report him, there are laws that require a landlord provide electricity, water, plumbing, heat etc. With no water this in an unhealthy living situation.
Call the housing authority and call city hall and speak to the housing inspector, report that your landlord is in violation by not paying the water bill. Why would the landlord transfer the water bill in his name then not pay it? Sounds like he still thinks your paying it. Better get this straight with the water company.
The garbage disposal is not a big issue, the broken toilet is, the yard is not he will get fined by the HOA if there is one. |
