the only "good" landlord, is adead landlord. I took aslumlord to housing court for lights. Water. And rent fraud . The dirt-bag interruped the case to take me to supreme court to have aguardian appointed, without proof I'm incapacited, to pay unproven rent arrears. At monthly rates not on the lease.lock me out of the apt. Destroy everything I own. Then have me falsey commeted to bellevue. I' m liiving in ashelter trying to find some legal help for poor people. All I'm getting's a runaround. Justice may be, like love, blind, but evan stone statues, can "see" the injustice here. Iwrite paridies, and play bongos, to keep whatever sanity, I think I still may have. Here's a few lines from a Simon and Gurfunkel tune, Richard Cory. "He must have some connection in the n.y. city courts. He'll make his own evictions when harressment does't work. And truly I can say to you, that not aday goes by. When I don't really wish that he would only just drop dead. Oh! I. I sigh in my misery. And I curse my landlord daily. And I curse my poverty. And I wish that I could be (x3) Vindicated.''

I've had my share of bad landlords and the only thing they understand is the $$ sign. My current landlord is very nice and keeps my house in very good shape. But just to be on the safe side I have the name and phone number of the city inspector. You wanna scare a scummy landlord? Show him an inspector's list of violations with a rough estimate of the fines he'll have to pay for not keeping your residence up to code. I tried it once and it worked. Trust me, they'd much rather handle your issues than face having to pay the city fines and still fix your place. Maybe you can look into that and get some official help with your issues. Good luck.

Ther are as many good landlords as there are good tenants as there are good marriages.

That is what the relationship between a landlord and tenant sometimes feels like (without the sex)

If you knew you where getting into a very intense relationship with someone, would you not want to make sure that there is a fit. So what does that mean, well the obvious.

Check referrences your landlord is checking your referrences, so why are you not checking their referrences, ask the names of the last 3 to 5 tenants
ask of the addresses of all the properties they use as rentals
or check with the tax office to find which properties they own and so see how they are, and talk with the tenants,
check with the city, and or police to see if the owner and or his properties have been involved with complains, evictions etc.
If your area has a residential tenancy agency, visit them and ask if your prospective landlord has had any hearings, complaints and or reports filed against them.

Going 3 deep with checking referrences is the key, ask the referred for more names, to check, check them and ask for more referrences and check those as well.

By the way, if you do this good landlords will actually appreciate you doing this, and they will realize that you are likely the type of tenant they would want in their property.

Good Luck

sure if they can't keep the place up to code you don't have to live there . they can't make you honer your lease if they do not keep your place livable

I have had some really terrible landlords but my current landlords are the two nicest people you could imagine ... and they take excellent care of the property.

I've only had one bad landlord. So, been quite fortunate. If you pay rent on time and yet they won't fix anything, then fix it, give them a copy of the receipt (plus give to ombudsman) and deduct from rent. It's what I always do and has worked out fine for me. But I've been lucky this time around, I finally have a landlord that is non-atrusive and fixes anything within 24 - 48 hours.

ha...my landlord out in tx was a moron. she told us one day when she stopped by that the tiny strip of grass BEHIND our privacy fence was actually part of our property and that we needed to mow it because it was starting to get over grown. so the next time i went to pay rent, i told her that we got it cut down and it looked a lot better. she then told me "what are you talking about, that's silly, why would i tell you that was our property? I never told you to mow that!!" i could have shot her in the face. she treated me like i was an idiot for doing it. i'm pretty sure she took her dumb *** back to germany...............................

My previous residence was falling apart..i tried for 2 years to get the landlord to fix it up for me. He use to cry broke all the time. I found out from a builder that the landlord was getting renovations done all the time on his OWN residence, probably from my rent money, i was furious! I would have moved quicker but housing around here where i live is hard to find unless your a millionaire..Eventually i found a house and the landlord cracked when i said i was moving. I dobbed him into the department of housing and he's now not allowed to rent the house out until all renovations are completed..I should have done it earlier..Never Mind. I have a great house now and my new landlord is a blessing!

I don't know where you live, but in Alberta there is a Landlord/Tennant board. Almost all places should have one. Check directory in your phone book. They know all the law and will help you if you have any problems.

I personally haven't dealt with a bad landlord but my mother has and had to get out of that situation. I think people get into being a landlord for the money and not realizing there's alot of responsibility to being a landlord other than collecting rent.
