Help! I have a rent control apt. in Hollywood for $580 a month. My landlady harasses me because she wants me?
to move so she can raise the rent. She has already run off almost everyone who was here when I moved in 4 yrs ago. I always win so far cuz I don't do anything wrong. I have to decide by tonight about an apt up the street that would be $470 MORE a month ($1050) but it is nicer, nicer neighbors, bigger, pool, ac, new heater, and allows animals. I've been without an animal for 3 yrs. and I am saving $$ cuz rent is cheap. In fact I just started taking a day off. There were all kinds of funny synchronicities last week that made me think I am supposed to take the new apt-but $470 more a month! HELP!

Start documenting everything down, even past conversations, in a log journal or save on the computer; make sure to re-save on a disc for back up. You need to protect yourself as a person and tenant.

Make sure that you date and time the incidents, word for word. Don't let her run you out because she wants to make more profit.

Contact the Tenants Union in your area to get info on your rights. If she ever tries to evict you for some B.S., make sure that you contact an attorney. Keeping a journal documented and dated will show that she has been harrassing you.

Is the new apartment really want you need? Are you home alot so a bigger place would be nice? Do you swim (not sunbathe) every day so you want a bigger pool? "new heater" in Hollywood wouldn't be needed much.
You're experiencing what everyone does under rent control. Your landlord is seeing $$$ too. Can you imagine your current place going for the same as the new one? It's likely she's going to try & rent it for that much. You've been a tenant for 4 yrs, which is probably extraordinary. If you had a pretty decent relationship with your landlord over that time, you need to try and resurrect that. If not, dig in your heels and stay put anyway.
You'll get to sit back and watch the tenants come in and then move out, and your landlord wishing she'd not run everyone else off.
Saving money isn't easy - that's a big plus for staying where you are.

Pretend to rent at the higher amount for the next six months....If you can do it w/out touching the saved money ($470 X 6mo = 2,820)....Go for it and then you have the security already saved up and you know going in that you can really afford the higher rent.

Or work a 2nd job and save every penny you can......buy a condo or small house.....You're in a great position....good luck.

Well It sounds to me like you are getting a deal where you are at. But if you are uncomfortable move. I really think feeling safe at home is important if you can afford it. But if you can't afford it, stay untill you either switch jobs or find a better but just as cheap place to live. You are doing great on the budget you have set forth, no reason to risk going on welfare just to have a better place.

Sounds like you may have already made up your mind.

Don't leave because of the land lady.....saving $470 isn't anything to sneeze at. If there is no rush to move (even tho the other place is much better) wait it out and save the money.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

jo_jo_baby2004
stay document her harassing you <mini tape recorder> and if you get enough evidence call the police and file charges

P*Kitty
i would stay put

Dave
Stay put, and put that $470 in the bank. This is your chance to get ahead.

stay there as long as possible. there is no reason to start spending more money then u need to. or atleast make sure u have a nice sum saved up before u leave the apartment u are in.
