Really this is a question for a mortgage broker. Your credit may not be as bad as you think, and if some of the debts are medical bills, student loans, etc. the bad debt is looked at a bit differently to mortgage lenders.
Each sitaution is very unique.
Do not waste your time doing anything before talking to a broker. They will run your credit report, and will be able to tell you EXACTLY what you will need to do... and if there is hope in your current situation.
If your credit is bad, but your debt to income ratio is good (yes, that is possible) things may be hopeful for you.
Do NOT go to your bank, that is probably the worst place to go. Look for a Brokerage firm that strictly deals with getting mortgages for people. |

yes here's the best advice I can give. start scrimping and saving, cut out everything that you can to save the money. THEN go buy a house with cash in hand.
If you have bad credit now, how do you expect to have someone trust you enough to lend you a huge amount of money, knowing they might not get it back.
You MUST always pay your bills first before anything else. and if your credit is bad due to you over spending on credit cards you only have your self to blame .
So let today be the start of the new you... pay your bills on time and start re building your credit rating one day at a time. and when things are better for you THEN you can buy that house |

They do have first time home buyers programs through the FHA where you put a small amount of money down. However; that said, the banks are being really bad right now about lending money and you will still have to have good or excellent credit to buy. Most realtors will even expect you to get pre qualified before they will even show you a home.
If you have someone in your family who can co sign for the loan you might be able to get qualified. But that person has to have stellar credit.
Sometimes though, people think they have bad credit when it's really not that bad. If I were you, I would go to your bank and see if you can get prequalified and what options you have. Nothing to lose by doing that. |

Clean up your credit, and save up for a down payment. FHA you will need at least 3.5% and up (dependent upon how bad your credit score is) and you will need closing costs, and money for things like insurance, good faith money, appraisal, inspection etc. It can be done but it takes money the more the better |

Seriously, with the economy the way it is (which is due, in large part, to giving loans to people with no or bad credit), qualifications for loans will be even stricter, as they should be.
The owner of the house may loan you the money, although with bad credit, your chances are not good. It will help if you have a large down payment. |

The economy is falling into a recession and stock markets are crashing for exactly the reason you mentioned. Too many mortgages to people with bad credit who can't make their payments.
Housing market is in the dumper. No one will extend credit to you unless you have A1 credit and plenty of cash for a downpayment.
