Hi, we are renting a flat in a building with 5 flats. Each flat has its own door,?
but there is a communal door that we enter the building through.

Tenants in the building tend to slam the communal door and their own door also. It is really loud and disrupting. They slam the door with the deadlock not retracted hence the loud noise. We have out a notice up.

This occurs usually during the day, but also as early as 7am when we are still alseep (workers who start later).

What can we do?

bring it up with your landlord
bring it up in any building management / tenant meeting

aside from that there is stuff all you can do
had the builder put on spring door closers that make the door shut slowly that would work. its quite a common problem with flats having fire doors it makes the doors heavier than people are used to.

if its a severe problem then talk to the council noise control, with it being "a flat" not an apartment I'm guessing that means you are UK based, so no police intervention is going to happen, and the landlord doesn't 'have' to do anything. As the first reply says.. our best solution is to move away if its that much of a problem.

however I'd guess you are probably fairly new to the flats so any noise stands out, over time you'll get used to it.

take the door off from the hinge`s should be six to eight screws (three to four per hinge) .
No door = no slamming door
problem solved hope this helps..

I guess by 'flat' you mean apartment. A complaint to the landlord should result in at least one of:

a) little rubber stoppers or weather stripping around the individual suite's doorframe

b) notice to the noisy tenant from landlord

c) hydraulic / spring anti-slam self-closing unit on common door

d) notice from police department / city hall to noisy tenant.

Presumably your flat is the nearest to this communal fron t door. Might I suggest you write a 'note' to every other tenant in the block and ask them to close the communal front door more quietly in future.

Tell your landlord about the problem.

I have this problem at the moment as well and to be quite honest with you there is not a lot you can do. I am presuming that you have community meetings as some point where you discuss issue buildings etc bring it up at this point explain that you are working later and politely ask if people will be a bit more considerate. I would not suggest writing a note as they can seem to be rude, it is better to ask people face to face.

For the communal door you could offer to pay to have a spring put on it so it doesn't slam.

Other than that unfortunately if people aren't willing to be considerate then you will either have to move or get used to it. it is an unfortunate side to leaving in a flat. (Or you can join me in praying that there door will fall off!!!)

In the US of A, noises within a multi-residence structure are generally regulated by the local ordinance for noise limitations.

In my locality, noise can be generated between the hours of 7 AM & 11 PM.

A reluctant landlord cannot be compelled to lessen your inconvenience as the other tenants have a right to enjoy the provisions of the local ordinance.

There is a possibility that you may be able to elicit some voluntary cooperation from your neighbors; however, if that is unsuccessful, consider obtaining an alternate reseidence.

Inquire of prospective landlord what the day noise level is & indicate that you are a day sleeper.

I live in a house, with some land on either side & still have a sign posted that I'm a day sleeper & do not wish to be disturbed without prior arrangements by telephone.

Good luck!

Probably not much.

I suggest you speak to the landlord or whoever is responsible for servicing the communal area. It may be possible to have quiet door closers installed but that, of course, would be at the building owner's discretion, the agreement of everyone required to pay, compliance with building regulations etc.

Also take a look at http://www.nfh.org.uk/ (Neighbours From Hell). Their forum members will be able to offer good advice - and an insight into some NFH antics to forewarn you about what you're getting into if your neighbours think your request for some peace and quiet is unreasonable.

door closure from hardware shop.''Briton 2003'' costs about £30.

This is very difficult to police. You can contact your agent/landlord about the problem. If you "post" notes through doors of tenants, you may find that the problem gets worst, out of spite. Maybe if the agent does nothing, get a notice printed to put on the back of the door with something like.
"When entering/leaving the building, please consider other residents when shutting the door"
Good luck.

Move, it will never go away!
