Holly Golightly | House overrun by ants, landlord won't do anything? |
I just went to visit a friend yesterday and her house is overrun by ants. Her landlord had just sprayed the outside last week, and now there are ants everywhere indoors. She told me that she had inofrmed the landlord and he told her to clean up, that they only come around for food. I saw her home, it is as neat as a pin! She is actually forced to keep her peanut butter in a bowl of water (sort of like a moat!LOL!) in her cupboard as they kept teaming up around the edge of the lid. Shouldn't the landlord do anything? She is in Mass, can't she just withhold rent until they do? Additional Details She has a baby in that house, so it is concerning. It was actually comical, they were all over the toilet seat when I went into her bathroom! She said that everything she opens will have at least one ant in it, and that she has thrown away a remarkable amount of food because they will get in. |

aslong as it is tidy, like you say it is.
Although if there is no actual major holes in the floors, or wherever the ants are coming in from, i think it is more down to the tenant (We always assumed it is, we have had that problem!!) obviously if it is infested with ants, their is obviously somewhere they are getting in easily, and must be coming in for a reason, so try and find out where the ants are coming in, and what they seem to be going for, as there must be a reason, ants dont tend to just overrun somewhere where there is no interest (food, sweet stuff, juice, fruit etc)
good luck |

she cannot hold back the rent until the landlord does something, but she could go to her local landlord tenant board and see what they say but from what i read ants in the house are her problem. I have fire ants in my place and they used to bite my children when they slept and when i mentioned it to my landlord he said i have to take care of the problem myself because the problem never existed when i moved in and after calling our local landlord tenant board they told me the same thing that it was my problem.
good luck and i hope everything works out for your friend.
its only a couple of dollars for ant traps and they work great why hasn't your friend done that yet? Thats all the landlord can do himself. |

I am not familiar with the state, but there should be some sort of health department she could call. I would suggest getting rid of the ants herself using Terro. It is a poison that the ants take back to the nest to kill all the ants.
I love the landlord saying they are going after food. Everyone knows you can be neat and you will still get ants. |

your landlord is by law supposed to deal with any form of pest problems as it is their duty, and as for him saying they are coming in for food he is talking crap,if the problem persists try and ask your local council if they can intervene on your behalf, they may even send pest control round to fumigate your house and bill the landlord for it, |

The tenant is responsible for the any problem. Also, fumigating is not guaranteed. I lived in an apartment overrun with ants once and the landlord DID fumigate and it only helped a few days. We discovered the ants were living in the walls so the landlord had the fumigator come back again to do the inside of the walls. It again was only a matter of time until they came back. One can have an absolutely spotless house and still have ants. Ants come after water, our biggest problem area was our bathroom. We moved out so I don't know if the ant problem was finally resolved. At least I had a nice landlord who was willing to help, not just shove it off on the tenant.
The next place I lived had ants also. I finally discovered their main nest and poured a mixture of equal parts Borax, powdered sugar and brewers yeast into and around the nest. Viola! I did not have any ants after that for the full two years I lived there! If I ever have an ant problem again I know what I'm trying again! My magic mixture! |

Get some boric acid at the local drugstore. Make sure that kids don't get near it.

Much better than chemicals.
She also needs to take everything out of the cupboards and throw it in the dishwasher. For the food, put anything open in a ziplock or the refrigerator. We get lots of ants where I live.
Holding the rent would not be a good idea. She should fix it yourself. |

time to move
OR, offer a place to stay at your house while the place gets fumigated.
the Queen has to move for the ants to move. |

Here's a couple of suggestions that will help. First of all you have to stop the ants on the outside first. Go to your local hardware store and tell that you want a pesticide for ants. Then go to her house and start on the outside at the foundation and spread this pesticide all the way around the house at the base of the house and then about three feet from the house. Then if there is enough of crawl space room under the house, go under the house and put the poison at the foundation of the house all the way around. This should take care of your problem, you should do this at least once a month until your problem is gone. |

I get alot of ants this time of year also.We can't spray due to severe allergies.I out line the inside walls of my house with crushed red pepper. The ants won't cross the line.
Good luck |

Landlord
|
The landlord has done what he is required to do, he sprayed for the ants. What more can he do? Clean for her?
She needs to use some Clorox and clean the house, being neat does not cut it.
She might want to think about spraying her basement, they might (there are no basements where I live, I am guessing) have set up shop down there and actually can't get outside now because of the spray along the parameter of the house.
Your friend can not withhold rent over an issue like this. |

Ant control isn't a landlord issue, dear. Next you will want him to come over and swat the flies in your friend's house ? Tell your friend to get some ant traps and put them about the house. |

If the landlord does not want take care of the problem she can report him for that. She has a right to a clean safe place for her children and herself to live in. |
