Housing Benefit?
Hiya all, Im pregnant due next month, and have been told that I can receive housing benefit?
How do I go about this? Do I look for accommodation first or fill in the housing benefit form?
How much housing benefit will I get?
Im 19 by the way.
Thanks.

Thanks for the answers people. Jon and David, Im not sponging off anyone, obviously you aren't pregnant and you haven't been in this situation and you never will. Don't judge something or someone till you have actually been in that position.

hiya, first of all dont pay any attension to the muppets who are slating you, at the end of the day your pregnant and a new and wonderful life needs a home to safe and secure in, and whether the goverment is paying for your rent or not is the question... first of all get a landlord who accepts dss tennants, when you find suitable house, go to the private sector at the housing office and apply for housing benefit, i know through experience they only pay up to £400 a month for rent , so try not go over that ammount cause you will have to pay it yourself. look for accomodation, then apply for housing ben, i wish you all the best with the baby, and i hope you find somewhere soon, obviously the people who answered the question have never been in this situation, they are all too boring, sitting ridiculing people on yahoo answers to get pregnant, lol

Apply first as I believe the benefit is paid directly to a landlord.

You need to get yourself off down to your local housing office and to your local housing benefit office, they will give you all the help and advice you need

Find your accommodation first and make sure they accept housing benefit as payment.

I think the housing costs have to be reasonable so you couldn't go to the city and get a luxury apartment.

You housing needs will obviously need to be assessed as if you make yourself homeless in order to get a place of your own, the council may say that they won't pay your housing costs.

Visit your local jobcentre and go to the income support section and speak to someone to get full detailed advice.

Assuming you are UK and not working, so here goes:

At the moment at age 19 single in a private let you only qualify for the single room rate Housing Benefit which affects all single people under 25 (pregnant or not). This varies from area to area but in the Midlands is about £45 pw towards your rent. So if you rent a house at £90 pw, you have to find the difference. (Remember this rule applies only in the private rented sector).

However if you go into social housing ie Council, Housing Association, or housing charity the single room rate doesn't apply and you get all your rent paid.

When you have the baby the single room rate doesn't apply in the private sector and you will get all your rent paid (assuming it is a fair rent).

You need to find accommodation first and then apply for Housing Benefit after. Its not just a case of filling in a form- you also have to provide proof of who you are (passport etc.) proof of income, details of any savings and your Tenancy agreement.

The Council administer Housing Benefit not the Social so give them a call and they will give you more details and send you a form.

You need to visit your local council offices, they are usually based in your nearest town hall, but phone numbers are in the phone book.

Do you intend on renting privately or waiting for council housing? Housing benefit depends on your housing requirements, if you don't intend to work at all you can apply and get your rent paid for you if you live alone, or if someone in your household earning you can get a portion of your rent paid. Council tax is usually covered if its just yourself and your child and you should also be able to apply for income support too.

You should apply now because the process usually takes about 8 weeks to go through, if your circumstances change for example if you move house you need to tell them straight away so they can adjust payments accordingly, if not they have the right to stop any money. Ask your local CAB for full information they are very helpful.

To Jon and David, that is a very blinkered view, single parents aren't all scroungers, I have been a single parent in this young ladies situation because my partner cheated on me after our daughter was born, I had to give up my job to take care of her, you should open your eyes and see the bigger picture.

mjammy1978
you need to speak to your housing officer or local neighbourhood office

if you are a private tenant, contact your local council

welshchick
if this is uk you will need to contact your local council for an application form, but you will need to have secured a tenancy or in the process of in order for them to process the claim. All the best x

It's all depending on your State and your income. Also, you need to call them directly and found out if applications are open.

Funds are low in most States, and some people have been on the waiting list for over 5 years.

Since you didn't say what State you live in, I couldn't help you do an on-line research.

Good Luck........

Well you don't say which country you are in, but if you are pregnant at 19, and the father isn't going to help (assuming you know who it is), you are most likely in the UK.

Did it occur to you to get the father to house you? Or your friends? Or family? Did you think of getting a job and paying your own rent? Nah! Thought not.

Sadly, this government bends over backwards to give money away to undeserving scroungers, so I guess you'll get a fair old sum. Tell you what have a couple more kids and treble you Child Benefit. After all, if you are going to sponge of those who work hard, go for the max. take all you can get!
