Measure a den or the living room area, many of the "average" homes dens or living rooms are about that size. That will give you a "feel" of the scale. Alternately you can take a string and a measuring tape, lay out the dimensions on the ground and have an idea but not the feel The living room measuring idea will give you the best "feel" as anything to do with a home involves your emotions, and that really is what you are dealing with, the "feeling" of the area. Plus it will have furniture in it, giving you an idea of what the space looks and feels like furnished.
You can then draw out the area on a 11X17 paper or poster board and draw in your furniture to see how it may fit you needs. Remember to consider if there are to be windows and the length of the walls against the size of the furniture so you have sufficient room. |

One way to see if the room is the right size for the purpose is to make a 2-d model.
Start by drawing a rectangle that is 7.5 X 6.5 inches on a piece of paper. This is scaled at 1/2" = foot.
Locate the windows and doors as marks on the wall outline.
If you plan to use it as a bedroom, make cut out pieces of paper for the bed, end tables and dresser. Arrange the furniture on the outline of the room. This way you will see if the room is suitable for the use. |

15X13 is pretty good/big. I have a bedroom that is 15 L X 11 W & I have a queen sized bed. Length-wise I could line up two queen size beds & width-wise I could line up 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 queen sized beds. (This is all head to foot, not side to side.) That's about the easiest I can help with when it comes to visualizing....I had to look at it like that when I rearranged it. |

You want to visualize what 15X13 feet looks like?
That's easy! Here's how you can easily visualize that:
Do you know how tall you are.....? (most people know how tall they are)....
Basically, just double your height, add a few inches here and there, and you'll get a good visualization of what a 15 foot by 13 foot room might look like, got it?
For example, if you're 5 Foot tall, then two of you, end-to-end, would make 10 Feet, right?
And if you're, let's say.....5 Foot, 7 Inches tall, then two of you, laid end-to-end, would make 11 Feet, 4 Inches.
Also, if you're 6 Feet tall, then two of you, laid end-to end, would make 12 Feet.

First, take you hand and place it carefully over your eyes. Now imagine a sunny day where you are outside playing near a field of flowers. The air is clean and the sky is bright. Now picture yourself laying out a blanket on the ground. Visualize yourself folding this blanket out over and over again until it is 15 X 13 in dimension. Now take your hand off your eyes, open them and smack yourself in the forehead 3 times for wasting everyone's time to help you figure out how big 15 X 13 is. |
