monkeyundermypillow | How can I find an apartment? |
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and right now, we are going through a huge boom in our economy and our vacancy rate is 1% . Also, rent is very expensive. I was wondering what the best way to find and apartment would be.
I am 5 months pregnant and I was wondering if my fiance should come with me to sign the rental papers or if I could go by myself. He works at least 12 hours a day 7 days a week right now. So it would be hard for him to come with me. I planned on driving around to all the apartments in the area we need to live in and just submit applications and if something was availible immediately, write a cheque for the first months rent and damage deposit.
Will they discriminate against me if I am pregnant, 22 years old and by myself at the time that I submit the application? Do they need his signature?
I keep having nightmares about not being able to find a place to rent in this city and I just need to know the best way to find somewhere to live |

I would first of all check out what you can on line before going out and driving around, it helps, to know what area you are looking at. The crime rate, schools, shopping is any of these thing important, to you. I say yes. Then, when I do decide where I want to go. I would take my fiance with me, and introduce him as such. It will appear to look better for you, let's just put it that way, if he goes with you and he signs the rental agreement. That is what I would do, of course it is up to you. Good Luck, with your search. |

Try finding a basement suite, or share renting a house. A basement suite is easier to find especially with your new family. Don't take any old one. Make sure it is up to code. There will always be another down the street, so don't feel pressured to take the first one you find. |

There usually is a local agency called "Apartment Locators" who can help you find what you need. Many "name brand" realtors also could help such as Remax, Century 21, ERA, etc. Some may charge a fee to help you, but it usually comes out of the first month's rent and most of the time it doesn't cost you extra. |

there are web sites that post openings of apartments in your area, i know of at least one, its been awhile since i looked on the net, but i believe its called rent.com, just type in apartment rentals in a search engine and it should come up with several web sites that help you find an apartment, also you can set up an appointment through the web sites also. |

If you have a myspace account you can check the classifieds on myspace.com.
You can also try craigslist.com, be sure to modify the search to Canada.
Also try some websites I found to be useful when I was searching for apartments:
www.rent.com
www.apartments.com
If your fiance is going to be on the lease with you it's important that he does go with you so that he may be there to sign the papers as well. If not, then he needn't be there. I'm sure that you may be able to work it out with the apartment leasing agent to have him go in when he's free to sign any necessary paperwork afterwards.
They can't discriminate against you, I wouldn't see why they could. I was alone when I did it, and I was 19 when I got my first apartment. Just be prepared. Being that you're a female, have already done your research, be prepared, know what you want so when it comes down to negotiating a price or whatnot you won't get jerked around or ripped off.
You may also want to check in with a real estate agent, some do specialize in helping people find reasonable apartments, not just homes. Look into that, then you'll have someone you can confide in and ask questions when need be.
Hope this helps. Good luck with everything! Congrats on the baby and the fiance! =) |
