How can I find out if I am moving into a bad neighborhood?
I have to move for school reasons, I found an apartment that is not too far from work.

What is the best way to make sure that the area is pretty safe.

One thing you need to do is visit the area at night. I live in Chicago and many times, a neighborhood will look okay or even good during the day when most people are at work or school or the gangbangers are sleeping. At night though, it's a different story. A realtor gave me that advice once and I've always remembered it. You can also pay a visit to the police station that would handle your area and ask them. While they cannot give you specifics of cases, they can generally let you know if it's a high crime area or what types of crimes are being perpetrated there. I would also check your state's sex offender registry (which many states have online now) to see if any child sex offenders live near the apartment building you're interested in.

You can call the city manager or police department to see what kind of crime rate that area has.

Neon Lights partyboybaby
you can tell if you see crackheads or porch monkeys

dayofthehippo
go there at 11:30pm.. and take a walk around the neighborhood with your wife/kids/mommy who ever.. if u r uncomfortable.. dont bloody move there... if u r comfortable... then you can download the the school graduation stats, sat scores, crime report, and of course median housing prices lists

jessica;
Call that areas police department and you can ask what the crime rate in that area is.

just ask your neighbours or look up on internet

Kelli
Get information about the police reports in the area over the past month. That will give you a good idea as to how safe it is. Call the police desk and they can help you with that.

Also, go into the area and knock on people's doors. Ask them about the neighborhood.

tercir2006
Police records OR the local library. The library should have all the papers from the local area. You can peruse the headlines to see what kind of problems keep popping up.

If what you read makes you nervous - then it's not a good neighborhood for you.

:)

Do the neighbors have bars on their windows? Does everyone run inside at dusk and lock the doors? Do people refuse to leave their cars parked on the street? Are the homes well cared for? Is there graffiti everywhere? Is there a cop on every corner?

angleheart20
Go to the local police station and talk with the officers who have worked there for a while.

TheGlove20
Dont worry as long as you mind your own business and dont stare at people they wont mess with you. One way you can check is drive around and see if theres some gangsters walkin around.

Toffy
I agree with DeeDee....yep that is a sure start...Also, go by the place after the neighbors are home from work, and kids are out of school and see what activities are going on....Drug deals on the street corners...clothing they are wearing...gangs big baggy hangy type clothing...women of the night walking or hangin out....You can tell alot from a neighborhood in the evening....especially on Fri or Sat nites....

onandonandonanon
call the police and ask them

Hey U, Yeah U..Get over here

you should go to a adive center and ask them as they would know.

Dx J
go to badneighborhood.com and it as a list of bad neighbors

ansmenam
You can google "crime statistics for (city, state)" and it will give you info. Also, google "police blotter for (city, state) and it should give you the police blotter for the local newspaper. We did this, and thankfully, did not buy a property in a high crime area. Good Luck.

There are numerous online sites that have this information. Also, talk to a librarian. With the internet, they are generally less busy than they used to be, and they can probably get the answer quickly.

Ask the apt manager about the crime that happens in that complex and then call your local pd and let them know where you are planning on moving and ask them about the crime rate in that area? They will let you know if there is a lot of one type of crime in that area, or they will let you know if that is a bad neighborhood. You can also ask them if there are any sex offenders in that area if your concerned about that also.

sissy

go onto the comp and find sex offenders and see if your area has any

sphiney
if they are like you then chances are that is not a good neighborhood.
