It's public record. I think you can go to the library or city hall and see if you can find out the information. Some websites charge you, but I don't think city hall will.... |

Actually, it is NOT against the law in nearly all states to not disclose a murder occurrence in a property. California is the only state of which I am aware which requires a certain amount of disclosure. Why ? Because a murder has NO bearing on the quality of the real estate involved. As long as appropriate repairs and cleaning were performed, the incident need not be disclosed.
As far as discovering if something similar occurred in your house, you can only check local police records and/or ask long time neighbors if they are aware of any such occurrence.
However, even if you discover that something like this occurred, you have no recourse against the sellers for failure to disclose. The only requirement is that they tell the truth if you inquire about such a situation prior to purchase. |

Tax records, search for your county....also search your street name in the local paper....as far as murders with holding info that depends upon the state you live in...here in NC it isnt info you have to tell... |

I think you can requrest a "chain of title" from a title company, they will search the recording records and show who has owned the house since it was built. |

"Who owned the home" won't necessarily tell you what happened there, though it could be helpful.
Start by going to the Clerk of Courts, which is where deeds and mortgages are recorded. It's public record, and the clerks there will nearly always be helpful. You'll chase the record based on "grantor-grantee" (who gave and who got).
Tell the clerk you want to build a "chain of title". That's a "chain" of ownership.
Take all those names and go to the local papers. Tell them you want to search their archive (used to be called a "morgue"). Search for stories on all the names you've collected, and watch for the address. You can tell which names to search in which time-frame based on the dates on the deeds (or other instrument of ownership).
You can also go to your local police department or sheriff's department, depending on which would respond to your house. Police calls are also public record, and they'll usually have records going back years that you can search by address.
You can also take those names you got in the first step at the Clerk of Courts Land Records, and go to the Clerk of Courts desk, window or office for Criminal Courts - and search those names for criminal cases. That could give you some clues.
Good luck; Have fun; Ask lots of questions; Be polite. Most people in those offices are helpful. |

Your local county courthouse should have records of previous owners. |

The register of deeds at the court house may be able to give you info on previous owners. There may not be details, though, and it may not be easy to contact previous owners. If the property was part of an estate, you may reach a dead end.
Years ago, instead of title insurance, people got the actual abstract of title, which listed all the owners from way back when records started being kept. That gave more clues than the present method. Former owners also may not be willing to talk about things that may have happened in the house. |

Your city should have records of previous ownership. This is public record, but it may cost you a small fee. |
