OK - I can TOTALLY help with this one! I was BORN in SLC (1966), grew up (non-Mormon) there, and my mother was the (Democrat, non-Mormon) mayor of SLC for 8 years.
You'll be in an LDS ward no matter where you live - just as you're in a Catholic Parish, somehow, everywhere. BUT - there are TOTALLY non-Mormon areas all over Salt Lake.
The closer you are to downtown, the better off you are. The "Avenues" are my absolute favorite neighborhood. Very, very close to downtown, great airport access, great hidden house deals, etc. (If you go to wikipedia, a bunch of the entry on the Avenues is mine.) You're near the University of Utah (a good source of "non-Mormonism", as well as the best pizza in Utah for over 30 years - The Pie! ;-). There're a lot of new gentrifying areas of converted lofts, industrial buildings, etc., to the south of downtown, near Pioneer Park.
The whole East Bench (above Foothill Blvd) is great, although pricy.
Basically - the Mormon issue is not nearly so big an issue as one might think. BUT - avoid being out in the sticks! |

Got news for you, You can't avoid it. Anywhere in Salt Lake is part of an LDS ward. If you are so opposed to living around Mormons, Why are you moving to Salt Lake? In case you missed that part of history, Utah was settled by Mormons and Salt Lake is the headquarters of the LDS church. Trying to move to a non-LDS part of Salt Lake, is like trying to move to a non muslim part of Iraq. If you want to live in Salt Lake, then you need to live their and be respectful of your neighbors and their belief, try to understand that they were there first and don't try to change them. Hopefully they will show the same respect to your beliefs and they will not try to change you. That is what the LDS church teaches. There is room for everyone in Salt Lake as long as they are respectful and friendly to each other, LDS or Not.
LDS wards are every where, not just in Salt Lake, you most likely live in one right now and just don't know it, because there are not as many LDS people where you live. |

I don't recommend doing a house search by non-LDS folks. You'll end up in South Salt Lake in the getto. The nicest and best neighborhoods are typically an LDS community, but that doesn't mean everyone is LDS. There are more LDS folks in Provo than SLC. Salt Lake is actually very diverse. So you shouldn't have a problem. I don't think it really matters anyway, do you? |

no matter where you live in the United States, you live in a LDS ward. Sorry, the LDS church goes by geographical areas. The valley is now less than half lds, so I would bet that even if you don't live in the Avenues by the U of U campus, you'll still have non-lds neighbors. |

There are LDS wards everywhere but that doesn't mean you have to be a member of the ward. Every neighborhood has non members in them. It would be very hard to find a neighborhood with only Mormons in it.
Only the very uninformed think Utah is only Mormons and they try to convert you all the time. Actually Mormons make very good neighbors.
You might want to try Bluffdale (the point of the mountain) that is where the prison is. I doubt there are many Mormons there.
I have lived in Utah over 40 years so I know what I am talking about. |

You'll have the best luck in the Avenues of Salt lake (and downtown as well), Park City, Ogden.
No matter where you live you'll be within the geographical boundaries of some ward. However, that's probably the case where you live now as well (it's just that the boundaries are bigger and the mormons are less densly populated).
...you might want to get to know em. There are some great ones! |

Much of SLC is now "less" Mormon due to the economy. Nicer areas often take two incomes to live and and that is not the Mormon norm. I am a realtor in SLC and there are many areas where the neighborhood ward (church) isn't the center of the universe. |
