How can I get a real estate lockbox off my front door?
I bought a condo about 4 months ago, and the previous owner's RE agent left the lock box thing on the door. I asked my agent to contact the other agent about getting it off, but it's still there. Is there something I can do to get it off myself? (Luckily, they gave me the key that was in the box, so it's empty)

If you have already attempted to call your agent and nothing is happening, I would call the local Board of Realtors. This is a violation of their terms. That box will be off your door in hours. Four months is inexcusable.

No. You need to call the broker-in-charge of the firm who will be able to remove the box. They should have the code.

PS: The first poster is incorrect....any agent CANNOT remove a lockbox...only the agent that put it on can take it off. They are confusing it with accessing the key to the front door inside.

Real estate lockboxes for keys all use the exact same key. Your agent, or any real estate agent, could have opened it for you.

I suggest you call the other agent's real estate office and ask them to come and get their lockbox. Lockboxes are not expensive, but they are not free either. If they dont want to do this for some reason, call around and find an agent who wants a free lockbox and tell them to come and pick it up.

A Realtor can get the lockbox, but they need the shackle code and that comes from the listing office.

Those boxes are not cheap, so call the office where the condo was listed, say you are going to have it cut off if someone doesn't come get it by some set time and date.

The easiest way is to replace the handle.

Go to home depot and buy another one.

Yes. The previous realtor's office knows the code to remove the lockbox. You should contact the "Branch Manager" of that office and report your problem. That person can track down the realtor and get the code for you or have the person come get it.

The lockboxes are designed to be secure so recommend you do the above. FYI, realtors have to buy these boxes so the realtor should want it back.

You did not mention what kind of lockbox it is or where it is on your door. There are several different types. Most Realtors use electronic lockboxes that hang on the door knob. These kind can only be removed by the agent or firm that put the lockbox on the door. Someone that has the shackle code will need to come by and use their electronic key to release the schackle and remove the lockbox. These lockboxes are very expensive. Usually $75 and up. If the listing firm will not send someone out. Do the simple thing.

Remove two or three screws around the inside side of the handle of the knob, Pull the doorknob apart and remove the lockbox that way. Then call the listing agent or leave a message that the lockbox will be on your doorstep for someone to come by and pick it up.

It's very easy to remove. Putting the lock back on is also easy but takes more precision to line the screws up properly. If you have never done this before, ask a friend who is mechanically inclined. In addition a hardware store lock department employee can explain how to do it.

It is also good Security to get a new lock and intstall it if the lock was not changed before you moved in. There is no way to know how many people may have a key to your move in.

Other doorknob lockboxes have a combination, code or typical key to access them. If the listing agent will not give you the combination or come remove it use the doorknob removal trick, and put it on the doorstep. These cost $30.00 and up.

Some lockboxes clip over the door or on the side of the door. These are not usually screwed in but are held in place by pressure. These are easy to remove by sliding the lock from the door.
