get those 'bars' for the outside of the windows...that way, no one can enter & you can have the windows open. |

Just open the windows a little bit and put a hunk of wood in the hinge so no one can open them more. |

They have those rods that you put in the inside so your window can be open but won't slide open enough for a person to fit through. OR you could buy a dog! :) |

plant thorn bushes and/or poison ivy/oak under your windows. that way if anyone tries to get near them, they will get cut up and all itchy.
you can check with hardware stores about getting decorative yet functional bars to attach to the outer side of your windows. they would keep intruders out yet let air in and still look nice. |

put a big old dresser in front of your window. Put a beware of dog. You can buy a metal bar and just place it on top at a level where you are comfortable so nonone can move it up or fit their body in. Buy a electric fan. |

If you are aloud to have pets I would get a dog. I live on the ground floor also I went to the Dollar store and bought some straight locks that you put on your doors, I put them on my windows then used a drill to drill a hole in the frame halfway up. When I want to leave my windows open I open them and know that no one can get in, because my windows are not open all the way. I also keep a nice big metal baseball bat by the head of my bed. |

1. get a dog
2. get an alarm system
3. get the bars for the windows (it'll look like prison, but well worth it).
hope everything works out ok |

You can have bars put on them. Sounds kinda bad but I actually see it quite a bit.
I live in a bad area too and keep my windows open, in the winter because I like the cold. I don't have bars, though. I'm just not scared of anyone or anything including death. |

Install bars over the windows or get an alarm system with motion detection. Or a couple of Rottweilers and Dobermans. Or a security guard. Otherwise, keep the windows closed! |
