Armony | How can I politely ask my roommate to pay back her loan? |
So I live in a small two-bedroom with my boyfriend and his older sister. She has been with us for 8 months now, but two months ago she wasn't able to pay rent ($300) because she is on employment assistance and doesn't work. My boyfriend ended up paying for her share she promised to pay us back, but in the two months since she has never mentioned the loan and seems to have no intention of bringing it up. Last month she could only pay $200 and we again loaned her the money, so she now owes us $400 and next month's rent is coming up. How can I politely initiate a firm conversation about when exactly she is going to pay us back, and to ensure she'll have this month's rent on time?
We've also asked her about a month and a half ago we didn't want a roommate anymore, and she has made no move to look for other places. Some advice on how to ask her to leave would also be very helpful.

The first thing you must ID is whose tenant she is--if she is your tenant, that is one thing.
IF she is just an equal tenant with you......that is something else.
I need to see the lease that you all have. AT a minimum, I would go tomorrow and
sue her in small claims court.........it is not a "bad girl" thing, it is a "mechanical thing"
when one person feels another has not complied with an agreement with another.
If she is not your tenant, you cannot evict her. Also, when July's rent is up,
ignore her. IF you have a lease that says "each tenant is responsible for the other tenant's
rent" that is a voidable lease--and no judge would back it up. YOU are responsible for you only.

Have your bf talk to her= she's his sister so she's his responsibility. If she's not paying rent, she has no money so of course she isn't looking for other places because she's living with 2 soft touches. Her brother should address both issues, and set a firm timetable= saying you want her out by zzz time, and mean it. |

No need to look for a polite way of asking for what's yours. Your roommate doesn't seem to have any trouble stiffing you without even trying to be polite. BF sister or not, it's time to evict her and take her to small claims court for the past due amount. She'll continue to take advantage of you as long as you let her. Balls in your court ! |
