How can I prove my rental history...?
How can I prove my rental history to other landlords if my only rental history is that I've rented a room from a friend who owns their own home and lives in it as well? I've been here for like 3 -4 years. I have not kept any receipts. We pay her half the amount or so of her mortgage for rent by check or cash.

Your friend can write a letter of reference.

Inundated in SF
Have your friend, your landlord, write a little letter of recommendation: You've been renting space from them for the past 4 years (whatever), you've always paid your rent on time, are a reliable and conscientious tenant, you've maintained the place well, have not created any problems and they highly recommend you, they can be contacted if necessary for a verbal recommendation. They don't have to say how much rent you paid or that they are friends of yours. Then they sign it and you can take it around when you apply for new rentals (don't give them the original letter since you'll need to use it again when you apply somewhere else, but they can take a copy). You should not mention that these are persona friends of yours. They are your landlords, you are their tenant and pay them for the use of the space you occupy in her house.

Just get a letter from your friend and maybe one or 2 photocopies of the checks you have written for rent, try to have the check dates as far apart as possible so it can give an idea to how long you have been there. She could just write a letter stating that you have lived there from this date to present and paid this amount monthly, and the payments have been on time. She should print her name at the bottom along with her signature and phone number if they have any futther questions. That should be enough for most landlords. Also if you claim the rent on your taxes you could show them your tax papers also.

Get in touch with your current land lord and if payed by check then pull out the bank statements.

Do you have a record of withdrawls from your bank account? Sometimes renters will also accept a verbal or written statement from the home owner.

give them her phone number or get the recipt book off her to copy as they are usually in duplicate.

Just make your current landlords contact the previous one , even if it was just a friend , tell them you haven't had the chance to offically be on your own and explain the situation

You can have her write a letter and sign it...

Just put that on the application with their name and phone number. Any potential landlord will call them to verify it. No paper proof is required.
