Leon | How can I quiet down my apartment? |
I live about 100 ft from a MAJOR freeway (5 lane). My sliding glass door faces the freeway and is single-pane. The apartment is a rental, so buying a dual-pane slider is out of the question. What can I do to block or reduce the freeway noise? It is so bad that I can't carry on a conversation in my own living room when the slider is open.
It would be nice to have something either transparent or removable so I can let natural light in. It is my only natural light source on that end of the house, so hanging up a huge carpet or plywood isn't really an option. I have a year left on my lease and I will not be able to move until it is up. Any Ideas would be great and highly appreciated!

Thanks to the first poster, but I need something transparent/translucent to let natural light in. Hanging blankets would make my apartment like a cave :( |

Have you thought about a curtain with netting? The curtain would keep in heat and muffle noise from outside. During the day, the netting would allow light through but go someway towards reducing the noise.
I found that a large part of noise can be reduced by what you put in the room. It sounds odd but having fabrics on the walls (tapestries) and fabric furniture (as apposed to leather and wood) reduces the echo in a room.
Short of that, you may very well have to live with the noise. You could just keep the door closed perhaps but I'm sure you've already considered that possibility
