How can I tell my landlord to stop asking for rent every month?
We have lived in this house for only 3 months, since we first moved in we have not been late with the rent at all. My landlord has called to ask me for the rent every month since we signed the lease. Is this normal? We've never had this done before, and we're a little uncomfortable with it. Should we address it with her?
Additional Details
It's just weird, we do NOT pay our rent late...NEVER have. We sort of need this roof over our heads...so wa pay on time. Oh and I mail her the rent checks per her request. My lease states that the rent goes from the 15th to the 15th of every month, but we pay it on the 1st of every month so we're pretty early, yet she still calls us for the rent...??

Maybe you should just talk it through with her politely. Let her know how her constant requests make you feel and see if it gets any better. Some people can be pushy without realising it, so just let her know and things might work out.

She has every right to ask for the rent. She is not asking for it before it is due is she? That would be a concern.

Laughing all the way
Tell her if you aren't able to pay the rent for whatever reason you will let her know. But tell her are very responsible and you always save enough money for the rent and the rent will be payed and there is no need to keep calling.

Sounds like the last tenants screwed her over, or she is just a nutjob.

Get caller ID and don't answer her calls.

Or, start calling her the day before she normally calls you and say, "just calling to let you know I will be paying my rent on time, just like the past 3 times".

Eventually she will get sick of you, as sick as you are of her.

TPMG
Call her and remind her to go take a dump everyday. Call and say "Have you pooped yet?" Tell her you are concerned about her regularity. Keep doing this until she takes the hint.

Since you state you haven't been late with the rent I am assuming that the landlord is asking for it before it is due? If this is the case I would just tell the landlord that they will have it on the first.

Now, however, if it is due on the first and they are asking for it on the first, then there is nothing wrong. I only mention this because I have had tenants in the past tell me that I shouldn't call for the rent on the 2nd because it is not late until after the 5th (I give a 5 day grace period before a late charge is imposed). this only happens once because I explain to them to read the lease. Rent is due on the first. The only reason there is a grace period is because I am nice and give a couple days in case the check is lost in the mail.

The reason i call on the second is so they know I haven't gotten it yet and have time to cut me another check since obviously the first was lost in the mail since I haven't received it by the due date.

I had the same problem with two different landlords...very intrusive and controlling.

The first one I would pay far enough in advance that she didn't need to ask the 2nd one tried saying I didn't pay 2 days after I just paid. I moved out that weekend.

There is really no accounting for some people's weird behavior. Either pay it forward or move. She has issues.

It's possible she's gotten stuck before and needs the income to meet her bills. You should address it with her that it makes you uncomfortable and ask her to stop. If it continues, just smile and say, "oh, it won't be a problem this month ... thank you for the reminder"

Mr. Peabody
Why not just hand deliver a postdated check to her a few days before the 15th? Better yet, why not save both of you some stress by giving her SEVERAL postdated checks at the same time? (Unless you're not sure if the checks will bounce - in which case, she's a smart lady.) You can always stop payment on them if necessary.
Be mean to her and she'll probably be meaner back. Life is too short.
