How can an everyday low-wage working person afford to live in a place like San Francisco?
To have a decent existence; instead of stressing out to the point you want to give it up?

Whatever you do - don't give it up.

Consider relocating to a different area that may be more affordable to live in.

Wishing you all the best

First of all, plenty of people can finish school and still not be a high wage earner, the education industry for instance.

I have never lived in San Fran or Manhattan, but it seems that a lot of people, especially young people, who lives in those cities have roommates.

Also, very expensive cities like those tend to have lots of rental opportunity, and therefore, even though it isn't cheap, rents are much more competitive than buying a property.

Hang in there and look into any programs the city may have for rent rebates or home buyers. For example, some cities and counties offer incentive programs for civil servants. Just an idea.

One word: Roommates

The same way they do in Los Angeles. Work several jobs and live with a lot of people in a bad neighborhood.

The cost of living in California is ludicrous. I am an engineer and I can't afford to buy a condo in a bad neighborhood. I'm nowhere near struggling, but for the money I make, I should be doing much better.

And get this: the kicker is, the salaries here are not competitive with the rest of the country! Employees here make minimum wage and for the same exact job in Kansas, Nebraska or Minnesota they will make $12 an hour!

People often get stressed out trying to make ends meet in the area where they live. It seems like there are no solutions. Don't forget that the world is a big place. If you move to a new city/state, etc......you can get a fresh start and meet new people.

Go to college. If you are a low-wage earner, other hardworking tax payers are forced to pay you to go to school and live fairly comfortably through government loans and grants.

And while you are there, Get a real degree with actual skills so that when you leave you can get a real job that pays you enough money.

The solutions are out there. Go find them. This is your problem, not anyone elses. Remeber that. Millions of people out there are living comfortably. Which means Millions of people have found a way. You'd have to be pretty incompetant not to find a way to be one of them.

Unless you can upgrade to a higher social class, get used to an everyday struggle. It sounds harsh, but this country needs a wake-up call. The so-called "American Dream" is a myth. We were all force-fed throughout grade school that if you work hard you will become successful and be able to afford a house, car and comfortable life. This is not true. The working class will always be the working class. The wealthy will always be the wealthy. Short of a revolution, there's no changing the system. It's the same the world over, but at least other countries have the dignity of a class system so you are aware of where you stand in society unlike in the U.S. where most working people are duped into thinking they are middle class. We are slaves to the man.
So, er, on that note, move to Oakland.
