How can i get a council house?!?!?
My husband and i have been on the Leeds Housing register since december and were originally told that we should have somewhere by June. 10 months on we're still waiting, we're currently living , along with our baby, at my parents and its a living hell. We've been awarded priority status for overcrowding and i bid every week for properties, i've also registered with all other housing associations and tried approaching new home builders to enquire about their allocation of housing association but just seem to be banging my head against a brick wall. Is there anything i can do?!?!?

If you are living with parents then you are not homeless. You will probably be waiting about 10 years.

I agree with the other posts. Tell your husband to GET A JOB!!! and sort yourselves out. Why did you have a baby when you don't even have a home? How stupid is that!

If you find out you're doing better than me. We live in a 2 bed 2nd floor council flat and we have five children. We have been on the council waiting list to move for 7 years and we are still here waiting. Before anyone starts to critisise me, my hubby works full time and we claim no benefits. We cannot afford to buy or rent privately because the house prices and rental prices where we live are extortionate! So if you think that you are going to be given a council house just because you live with your parents and your baby then you will be in for a long wait!

consider finding an house on rental . and getting housing benefit its easier and many ppl choose this option rather than wait sitting on the council housing list

More than likely you are waiting for accommodation in one area ?
Have you tried bidding in other areas such as Bell Isle,
Gipton,Middleton,Cross Gates,Armley,Beeston,Seacroft,Drighlingt... Morley ?to mention a few.Leeds is a very big city with lots of empty
council homes just waiting for good tenants to rent, but for lots
they want to be in an area that mum lives in.Cast your net
further afield, you can once in a house or flat not of your
choice of area put in for an exchange. This is what i did, being a Leeds tenant now in a lovely area of Middleton, having lived
in a few different areas of Leeds and now seeing my days
out in a home we love after bringing up a large brood.

If you are bidding every week for properties it must mean that you are being offered places, if you are being offered places it must mean that you are already at the head of the queue, just be patient.

It does occur that being on a housing register for a mere 9 months and already being offered housing, gives the lie to the supposed housing shortage.

Simple overcrowding, in my opinion, is not an adequate reason to fastrack entry to council accommodation. Why, for instance, can't you rent privately?

Why did you have a baby, when you had nowhere to live?

Evidence is, that once on the path of living with council handout, it is very hard to escape the benefit lifestyle.

My advice is to make the necessary sacrifices and improve your new lives through your own efforts, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and in the long term, you'll look back on your achievements with pride.

Since councils started insanely selling their stock at knockdown prices under the then tory governments legislation housing has become a major problem for low income familes especially coupled with the mass migration from other countries to the UK
Ten months is nothing to be honest if you were homeless they have two years to house you permanently If you really want to move out then I suggest private accommodation there are deposit schemes in place and you can remain on the housing list.

I am kind of in the same position as you and have done all the things you have done, its frustrating and worrying, however the council cannot magic a house out of thin air, there may be other families who have been waiting longer than you, or have medical issues.

Good luck but i think like me you have to be realistic about being rehoused.

PS I work f/t and overtime when avaliable, and dont have a husband who drinks and spends our money in the bookies, in fact i dont have a husband at all and on my wage i cant afford a mortgage.

There isnt anything you can do, except register with a different council where the waiting lists arent as long, but that could mean moving up to the other end of the country

Funny Lad
you will just have to keep going down there to make sure you stay in their minds, maybe you need to go down there with all your clothes and sit in the waiting area.

cakeyspig
You need to be an out of work, drug taking, gay, foreign alcoholic. You'll get a council house and a car straight away and not have to pay a penny for anything.

If you're English - well you'll just have to wait and like it!

keep phoning your council estates manager every
day asking have you found any where yet
they will soon find you some where
good luck.!!

I work at a letting agent, and know that if you make yourself get evicted then you go to the top of the houseing list.

This is of course a real pain in the **** for Letting Agent and Landlord.

Depending on how you do it, it can of course affect your credit rateing, as the usual way is to stop paying rent.

You do risk prosecution, unless the council start to pay the rent for you.

There are underhanded ways of doing this also. Talk to landlord. He might take cash (Undeclared) and start the eviction process. Thus ensureing your not actually homeless.

All in all a bit of a pain in the ****!

Just be patient and keep the pressure on. So few places become available... Homeless families with numerous kids and asylum seekers get priority. Either that or have another couple of children, but you and your husband are responsible people aren't you. and as such keep getting pushed back in the housing list. . In the long run you must look to try and buy your own place.

yes, you could consider going out and getting a job so you can try and buy your own house. Keeping your fella out of the bookies and booza everyday will also help to fund this. Hope i was able to help x
