confused | How deep is my ownership of land beneath my property? |
|

Probably just a couple of feet! Mineral and mining rights are completely seperate from land ownership. |

I'm guessing that you're in the UK, from the fact this is appearing in UK answers.
The Land Registry is technically a registry of what's known as "Surface Ownership."
As I understand things, your ownership is as deep as is reasonably required for enjoyment of your property - that's to say that you can dig foundations to a depth required to keep your house or an extension stable, but that's about all.
How deep this will be depends on your property. If you have, or get planning permission, for a basement or cellar, then you can go down there, plus beneath for as deep as foundations are required. If your construction / area requires piles to be driven, then you can drive them.
Likewise, you can excavate part of your garden to create a "sunken garden".
HOWEVER...
You will find that, under the terms of the Title Deeds (Land Registry entries) for your property that the various utility companies have certain rights to their service tunnels / cables.
Likewise, if you live in an area with Underground Trains (London), then LUL or TfL will have ownership rights over those tunnels.
Also, if there turns out to be gold in them hills, the bad news is that it's not yours.
- Coal is owned by the (public) Coal Authority, under the terms of the Coal Industry Act 1994.
- Oil is owned by the Crown under the Petroleum (Production) Act 1934.
- The rights to gold and silver in most of the UK are owned by the Crown. |

you do not even own the land you think you own, let alone the land below you. sorry, but you are just paying rent to the government. |

Is this like a mining rights question? I think I heard once that in some countries you own to the centre of the earth, but not in the UK. You have no mining rights, but I'm not sure. |

Depends on the state. In Texas the mineral rights are separate from the land itself. |

I beileve that it goes down to the centre of the earth, unless there are pre-existing services (underground trains, etc) running in that space. |

Your property or house built on the land you own belongs to you. But if you want to change the structure of anything below or over your property, you need to apply to the land office in your area to get their approval. |

Unless there is a deed restriction, easement for utlities, or some other unconventional issue, your ownership rights go right to the center of the Earth (not to China, as the Chinese go to the center also, logically).
It is still a good idea to call the municipality before you dig, because you don't want to inadvertently hit a gas line or electrical cable that might be there.
This doesn't mean you can start a coal mine or drill for oil (the neighbors might have an issue), but you can drill as deep as you need for a water well or pickling cellar. |

you own all above you and all below.. line running acroos over head requires your approval... oil drilling requires your approval.. lots of slant drilling to get around this ok |

It would have to be as far as it is possible to go. Otherwise people could apply to build tunnel-tyle houses underneath yours. |

Hey, good question. I'd hope it all the way down but it's a safe bet if there was any oil down there they'd find a way to evict you. |

All the way to China :)). I know you are allowed to drill for water and you may need to go down a thousand feet to get a good steady supply. In my case the ownership is still between me and the bank :)) |
