MinibabeUK73 | How do I ask my Landlord to install a shower? |
I'm renting a flat privately. I moved in at the end of July last year. The bathroom has a bath only & no shower. My contract is due to be signed again for another 6 months in July. Due to work commitments, I havent really spent much time at the flat since I moved in, but am back at home all the time now, and I really miss having a shower.
How do I ask my Landlord to install a shower? Is it something that I should offer to contribute towards or if he agrees, should he pay the full cost?
SENSIBLE ADVICE ONLY PLEASE! |

it isn't a hard thing to convert a "tub faucett" to..an outlet for a shower..
your landlord may agree to this if you have the information
you simply change the faucett (the fresh water supply) to one that had a small outlet to add a "hand held" shower..that water faucett is simply screwed onto the wall.. so it is taken off and a bare pipe is there and the new faucett screwed on..
no walls taken down.
this is all done on the outside without ripping down walls.
lots of company's sell "hand held" shower and that is put on the new faucett and a water divot..supplies to the tub or diverts to the shower..
it isn't expensive.........
then you need a shower curtain.............
good luck... |

My advice would be to come out and just ask him.
Legally he doesn't have to supply you with one because there is a bath tub there. He may however not want a shower in there, so even if you were to pay you wouldn't be able to have one installed. If he is fine with having a shower installed, most Landlords contribute towards the cost of the shower as it will stay in the property after you leave because it will be all plumbed in.
So once again, just be rational, and haggle as much as you can for the shower. (use the fact that you won't have the shower when you leave as a bargaining point) |

You should offer to contribute to the improvement. However, you might also check at home improvement stores for easily installed shower heads which are attached to a flexible hose which is fed from the bath spout. You aren't specific about what it might take to properly do a shower here. This might run into some serious money if the walls surrounding the tub are not proper for shower water and have to be tiled. |

Just ask. The worst that he can say is "No."
I was in that exact situation about 10 years ago. I asked the landlord if he was willing and he said he wasn't. I offered to pay for the full cost if I could specify exactly what was to be fitted. He was most happy to accomodate on those terms. I got exactly the kit I wanted, and he got a free upgrade to his property. |

You can only ask if he would mind putting one in for you. If he makes a fuss then offer to half with him! Good luck! |

Ask.But don't offer to contribute to the cost.Your land lord may
not want you if he thinks your causing waves.Be prepared to move. |

Until you ask him and get his response this question is a bit pointless.Negotiations over who should pay or contribute are not appropriate until he has indicated whether he will consider your request favourably.Ask him,he can only say no.If he does decline offer to pay part of the cost.If he still refuses ask if he will allow you to install one at your own expense,,if you are willing to do this.He will probably say OK as the flat is being improved and he is the one to benefit from an improvement to his property. |

Beg & plead. we know landlords are as tightfisted as anything when it comes to spending . |

Phone / write and ask him. You never know he may well say yes without any further pleading being necessary. At least by asking the question you know what you're up against. Hope you get your shower :-) |

Just ask. He obviously can just say no, even if you're willing to pay for it. I offered to pay for central air conditioning for a house I wanted to rent and the landlord just didn't want the house changed. You should tell him the unit will be easier to rent in the future with a shower, and he might be more inclined to allow it and might pay something. |
