How do I deal with a rent increase of $250 which violates my lease agreement?
I signed a lease for $700, which I paid monthly on the dot for three months. This last month, it was $950. I signed a one year lease clearly stating $700. I talked to the management office, but I just don't believe they're on the ball with these things...after all they did screw up the rent. Who else can I go to? Is this reportable?

If you have a contract for 700 a month, then you pay 700 a month.

Let them try to fight you on it.

The whole point of lease is an agreement on rent and term of that rent. When the lease is signed: you agree to rent the place for a given time and the renter guarantees that the rent will stay the same for the term of the lease. You can definitely challenge him. Also check with others, if the rent has been increased for them too and also check the rent for new renters. If you are the only one then you can file for harassment as well as discrimination.

You have a signed lease which will back you up.
Pay your $700.00, have proof and sleep tight.
They will lose in court.
Why worry, no need to.

The lease backs you up only pay them $700 a month and no more, they are out of their minds.

Just pay $700 and be sure to have proof of your payment. They will have a hard time pursuing anything beyond that without proof that you agreed to such an increase. They could not even evict you. However, there may be a clause that states that they have the right to terminate the lease at anytime. In which case, they will should give you notice that they plan to terminate the lease on X day.

You need to find out which court deals with landlord tenant issues. Look in the yellow page for the court in your area call them and explain your situation .... they will refer you to the right place. Best luck

I think if you have already signed a lease for a year stating $700 then they can't change it to $950 until that lease ends. Leases are there to protect both the tenants and the owners.

But in Australia most leases only go for 6 months/half a year. Most people will not let you sign for a year. Since they all want to increase the rent every 6 months.

is this rent 700$ a month? that's 175$pwk? that's very cheap. here in Australia most houses rent for 350 - 400$ a week.

if that rent is monthy then that increase is of $62.5 a week which is HUGE! Maybe they don't like you that's why they are raising the price to kind of force you out?

um... don't act on your emotions maybe there is a managment change. the old manager might not have had the heart to raise the rent so the new manager must ramp up the prices to the current market rate. make sure you check out what the current market rates are if they are better leave that place and find yourself a new home. if the current market is still higher and more expensive you would be better off to put up with the price increase.
