How do I find an apartment when I'm moving almost 1000 miles away?
In a few months, I'm planning a move to another state. Kind of like a starting-over thing. I don't have the extra money to make an extra trip to check places out. A friend of mine stayed in a hotel until he found a place when he moved. Anyone got any other advice? I'm just worried, b/c I don't know how long it'll take to find an aptmnt. if I wait til I get there to look..therefore, staying in a hotel might get pretty expensive. Well, any help is very much appreciated.

What I did was check out the local newspaper online for the area and found an apartment that way. So if you are moving to Chicago for example, then you would type in Chicago newspapers into a search engine and it should give you papers to check out.
Then just flip through the classifieds and find an apartment. DO NOT do the Hotel thing unless you have money to burn.
I have done moving through both routes and trust me...you end up rushing a rental place when you have money being thrown away to a hotel every night. Far better to check out the local listings if you can. www.rent.com doesn't give you good deals either, and neither does any of those online rental places. Since those ads are paid for at a premium the rentals tend to be more expensive and not as nice as places found in classifieds.

Hope this helps.

I'd start off with some advance research on line. See the availability of apts, rental/purchase fees etc. Areas they are in and what's available there. Then start contacting some of those agencies for more details. Perhaps you could have a few viewings lined up before you move? Could you afford to stay in a motel for a few days while you looked at a few apts? Good luck with the move, I hope it all goes well for you and you find what you're looking for (in all ways).

craigs list on the net.

I moved to Japan without knowing where I would live. I moved to Chad in central africa without anything but a job. Now I live in France and this was the only place that I knew I had a place to land.

mysticfrogy82
www.rent.com Or you can google different apartment communities where you are moving to and have them give you a brochure or information about their apartments as well as a website if they have one.

Well you have a computer - yay!! Get names of complexes in the area - either doing a yahoo yellow pages search (yp.yahoo.com) or just google "apartments for rent in xxxxx, state"...you can google each complex and see if they have pictures - many will have interior pictures so then you can see what it's like before you get there. Try to go for one that has pictures of the inside of the apt (not just the grounds) and if they do..don't focus on the furniture! Know how much you want to spend, essential features inside the unit - washer/dryer or just hookups, garbage disposal, dishwashwer. Find out what amenities the complex pays for - water/sewer/garbage? Check on deposits and how much is refundable. Think about your lease term - 6 mo? 12 mo? and then does the rent go up when you switch to mo to mo. Also you didnt say if this was for a house or apt..so you may have to take out some..haha.
Find out what yr it was built and/or remodeled. Ask about the management..their hours and availability..and security of the complex - is it patrolled? I think that should keep ya busy. I have the email feature so feel free to message me if you need more help. :-)

Go to rent.com, rent411.com. They have pictures and such that you can look at of apartments, they usually have room sizes and everything written on the websites. You can call a place you like and have them send you an application for residency, and just mail or fax it to them.

Get on the Net. Well you are already there so Google where you are moving to and you'll see.

look on the internet

I recommend apartment.com and also the 411 website that somebody mentioned. Most of the apartments on apartment.com will look good but 411 will let you know if there's problems with bugs, mgt etc. I'd recommend a six month lease if you can get one...after six months, you'll know if you need to move closer or further from work, etc. Or you might like it enough to renew the lease.

Good Luck to you!

Look on the Internet, put your stuff in storage when you get there. Get a cheap hotel for a few weeks, and then go from there. I would personally check out the apartment b4 you rent because some can look good on the Internet but be infested with bugs. Good Luck and I hope you find something fast and soon. If you have a family member or a close friend that lives up there? I don't know, but you will find something. I would only sign a 6 month lease just in case you decide to get something fast that way if your not happy you will have more a chance to look since you are there in town. Good Luck Happy Holidays.
