How do I get my landlord to stop the flooding of my apartment?
I have a townhouse that has a porch and sliding glass door. Twice since i've lived there and we get heavy rains, the water comes in from underneath the carpet by the door. The first time it happened, the landlord just pulled up the carpet and replaced the pad and washed the carpet. Since this is the second time, how do I stop this from happening again-I don't want to move out.

LET HIM KNOW THAT HE IS IN BREACH OF YOUR RENTAL CONTRACT AND IF THE PROBLEM IS NOT RECTIFIED, THAT YOU WILL BE FORCED TO CONTACT THE HEALTH BUREAU.

its sounds like your living in a flood prone area. i d suggest putting sand bags near were the water goes into the house before a storm. Also you can ask the landlord about trenching the area or if they can hire someone to construct something to redirect the flow of the water. In order for this to happen it requires trenching, digging and moving dirt.

The obvious solution to me, is to stop paying the rent until he does. The logic would seem that you paid a deposit for a house in x condition which was worth the amount you pay. Recalcitrant, run-of-the-mill landlords like a kick up the 'who-wha' just like anyone else to get moving on something they'd wish would go away.

Tell her your gonna move out if it happens again

Tell the landlord it is still happening. The landlord would be the last person who wants to see their property get damaged.

You can try calling 311 if you live in Chicago if not you can call your city or villages town hall to get in touch with the department that handles complaints that landlords wont take care of. Good luck I know how frustrating this can be because I have a landlord thats about as bad as they come.

Call your public health department they will tell you who to talk to.

Call the housing development/housing authority. They will be able to answer your questions.

It sounds like the problem is an easy fix, probably just needs new caulking and weather stripping around the bottom of the door. Pretty cheap to fix, too, that is unless the whole thing needs to be replaced because of water damage (that would not be your fault).

I would suggest reporting them to the health department or even calling the police...I'm sure they coud direct you where to call...
