yezzur | How do I know that the advertisement on craigslist is not a scam? |
I responded per email to an ad on craigslist. The person wrote back...with very poor grammer and overall, not very good english. She said she was a doctor who was "out of state" and gave a number to call. I googled it and it was in Africa.
She said we need to send her the application. After her decision we would send her the deposit and she would send us the lease paperwork/keys. I emailed back and told her i would not send money without some sort of contract. And that I want do to business face to face to avoid a scam.
The response email was even worse english in which she said it was not about the money and guaranteed it was not a scam...she just need someone to take care of the house while her doctor duties require her to be overseas.
I'd like to mention that the add is on other sites as well. Is there anyway I can call the city to find out who actually owns the house and if these people are really telling the truth? |

As much as you may wish it was not, it is a scam, plain, simple. DO not waste more time on this. |

SCAMMMMMMMMMMM
They jump all over rental listings. Just make it a policy that you're NOT renting to some one you can not see and check out. Require that they be employed locally for 6 months prior to renting. This is the reverse, they're listing a house they probably don't own. Some yahoo fell for this, and the LL couldn't even give them the address. |

Anything other than "meet me at the apartment so I can show it to you" is a scam. |

It's a scam. Along with the doctor who wants to move to the states and wants to send a cashier's check while the owner wires the difference back to them.
To find the owner of a house, you will need to pull title. Most brokers and real estate agents have connections to pull title for free.
Also, be careful of other Craigslist scams:
1. Someone charging an application fee to rent the place only to deny you and keep the $60 or whatever they charged.
2. Someone getting application information to steal your identity
3. Someone actually showing up with you at the vacant home giving you the keys that were in the combo box in exchange for your deposit and first months rent and then to find out that the house was for sale/lease and that guy wasn't the owner, he just got access to the MLS (Realtor database) to get the combo code.
4. Same as 3, but they rape or mug you.
5. And my favorite...Someone renting you a house that is in foreclosure!
I don't know where you are, but in Southern California, real estate agents get paid by the owners to find tenants and the tenant pays nothing. I would suggest you look into that route if you want to rent through private parties instead of apartment buildings.
Good Luck. |

First of all, no money or info should change hands until you see the inside of this place. Follow your common sense, if it feels weird, stop the transaction. Just remember that if you're renting, who are you going to call if something breaks, you could call the tax office and find out ownership also. |

Its a scam, obviously. Most doctors have pretty good English and grammar, so there is really no reason for the bad English and grammar. If you googled the number and it turned up in Africa, then you should know right there it is a scam. This is just one of many variations. Delete this email and do not respond to it anymore. It is a scam where you are left on the hook for the money transfers, etc. which can add up to a pretty good amount. |

Use common sense.
You will not rent any property unless you have toured it and can deal with a person local to the property.
A doctor who is overseas is going to HIRE a property manager to handle this for them. They do not put ads on craigslist. You would go in person to the property manager's office to see the unit, pay the deposit, sign the lease and get the keys. You would not do anything by mail.
The scammers have perfected this scam as both supposed landlords and supposed tenants. In both cases they try to get the victim to send them money via Western Union. If you don't just send them the money, they will come up with wild ideas like sending the money through Western Union, but under the name of "your friend" (as if this would somehow prevent them from getting the money--it doesn't).
Clearly you need to stop all communications with this thief. What's worrisome is that you didn't figure this out when a) the letter had bad English; b) they phone number was in Africa; c) they asked for the money via Western Union; d) you found the SAME identical ad in other places and e) you are still hopeful that the too-good-to-be-true rental is available to someone and if you could just find the one true ad, it could be you. Get over it. The listing was fake. That unit may have existed 2-3 years ago and rented for 2-3 times as much. |

This ad is a scam.
In answer to your question as to whom owns the home. You can look up your county on property tax assessments. I do this all the time and plug in the address. You will get a lot of information on the dwelling. You can call the court house for more information. |
