google the name of the place and the word "ratings". it should bring you to a site that will have ratings from current and former tenants.
If the place is not an apartment complex, google his name and see what comes up. You may be able to find out if there were any lawsuits against him this way. |

There should be a listing on the web page of the state you live in. Go there and look up housing and/or rental properties. |

Ask currents tenants what the think about him. Outside of that, the only other step would be to hire a P.I. But I doubt that would be worth it for you. Just ask around a little bit. You will probably get a good impression from what people say. |

Talk to tennants who already live there. Ask how long they have lived there and are they happy with the landlords responses. Look at the building...is it well-maintained, clean grounds, smoke alarms and fire extinguishers accessible. If it's an apartment complex, check with the area Better Business Bureau |

Go to www.apartmentratings.com and search for the name of the apartments. It will tell you what other people have thought of the place. |

I guess maybe outright ask the landlord for previous renters name and number and ask them yourself. I think that's the only way to get a true answer. You'll just have to be blunt and come right out w/ it. |

In my opinion the condition of the place that you are renting is also a clue. If it is very run down and not well upkept it is definately not someone you want to rent from |

Ask the neighbors and check with the board of health and see if they have had any complaints. |

Easy. Talk to the other tenants in the building. They will have no vested interest in telling you tails. Try to talk to three for a balanced response - tell them right up front that you're thinking of renting from their landlord, what's their experience been, how quick are repairs made, how fairly have they been treated.
Always keep in mind that some tenants tend to magnify problems and minimize benefits (they often assume they are entitled "rights"), so take that into account when collating your answers.
Best of luck to you. |

ask the former tenants or go and ask the housing commision to see how many complaints were issued by the former tenant |

If you are nervous about getting yourself into a bad rental agreement, just do a little research. Ask other tenants of this landlord if they have ever had any problems while living there and what the landlord's response was. Also, it might not be a bad idea to bring a friend/family member with to see the place. They might notice things that you may have overlooked or not thought of.
Another thing you might take into consideration if you are skeptical is to find a place that does not have a very long rental agreement/lease and or a very high damage deposit as these things can hold you to the property in the event that you would otherwise want to find a different place to rent. Renting is becomming more popular with the rising cost of owning your own property and it is becomming easier to find a great place to live without much commitment. If a place makes you nervous just keep looking. You'll find the right place soon.:-) |
