First: track EVERYTHING you spend. The most important step is figuring out where your money is going first and foremost. Regular bills like rent, insurance, car payments, power bills are easy to recognize, but you need to track less regular ones like groceries, and irregular spending like gifts for friends and family, how often you put a dollar in a vending machine, etc.
Once you see where it's going, you can better decide where you can cut back. Cost of entertainment is high? Perhaps stop going out to movies and rent instead. Or if your grocery bill seems unusually large, shop for staples when they're on sale, and be careful to shop when you're not hungry (less likely to make unneeded impulse buys), plan meals that will leave leftovers you can eat later, drink tap water instead of soda, etc. Look for what seems excessive and think of ways you can bring those categories down; note where you want those categories, and you have a budget. Then KEEP tracking, to ensure you're staying on your new budget. |

Coop washing up liquid -27p
Buy cheapest toilet paper - your bot won't notice the difference
Buy supermarket own brand baked beans and other stuff as much as you can - theres not much difference with that and heinz
shop at Netto and Aldi - you can get good stuff there really cheap
Fish fingers, bread, eggs, tinned mackerel, cereal, cheap own brand burgers, brown rice will provide cheap and nutritious foods.
Don't leave tellies and computers on when not used, don't leave them on stand by.
Put a warm jumper on instead of the fire.
Get energy saving light bulbs
Smoking and drinking are big money losers - try cut down or stop if you do either
A £3 pair of jeans from Asda is as good as any other jeans on the market. Designer clothes is just waste of money snobbery, above a certain price you are not paying for extra quality - no one of any worth cares about the clothes you wear.
Pop in to charity shops and get some clothes from there.
Keep your eyes peeled for bargains - for instance my local coop sell polos for 39p and tescos sell them for 24p - a massive difference. It all adds up.
Try avoid credit cards, they can easily get out of control.
And finally:
Have a £1 flutter on the lottery every week and pray |

I keep a notebook of all my bills, one page for each bill. I divide each bill by the number of paychecks in a month, and budget out that amount, so I have enough saved to pay the bill when it is due.
Each payday I subtract the amount for all the bills from the checkbook as a lump sum titled "to budget for bills", and distribute it to the pages in the notebook.
When I pay each bill, I nottate it in the checkbook without subtracting the amount, because it gets subtracted in the notebook.
This way, I know I will be able to cover all the bills, and whatever balance shows in the checkbook, is what is free to spend.
This method has worked well, especially for the big bills like the mortgage, car payments, and car insurance, but you can do it with all the bills.
Anytime I found I had saved too much, I either let it ride for the next months payment, or shifted it back to the spendable portion in the checkbook. |

You can cut the cost by doing simple things. Don't eat out too much it's better if you can cook at home. Use energy effecient
bulbs and keep your ac or heat at a decent range. Cutting your electric bill is a good one..turn everything off while at work. Don't buy what you don't need. Have your check electronicly deposited in your account and "pay" yourself an allowance..Don't drive too much. Cut your cost of fuel by using public transportation or only drive short and neccesary places. If you need a good new coat or clothing go to the most expensive town that you live in and get them from a Goodwill...alot of wealthy people donate never used stuff.
Make sure that your W-4 refund planner is correct so that you don't have too much or to little taken out and have to wait for a tax refund in one lump sum instead of in your weekly check. Single 1 is best. Does not matter what you put on your W4 that is just what the IRS uses as a guideline to take out your federal witholding. You could end up getting bigger paychecks and still get a refund. |

Dreaming of home

Sit down with a pen and paper and write yourself a balance sheet, it's not complicated. On one sheet write all the money you earn in a month after taxes, on the other write all the money that you know will have to be paid such as rent, electric, water, garbage, etc. If your outgoings are larger then your earnings, well you are in trouble. If your earnings are larger, look at that amount as your budget.
The next step I recommend is looking at the basics, or what I call controlables, for example start reducing your electric, water, long-distance phone call usage, etc. If you are vigulant one can save nice money on utilities. Shop around for garbage services - I just switched to a new company at $20 less per month. Shop around for best combo services for your phone, internet, etc. The second step is looking at your food, gas and all other expenses. If your earnings where larger then your controlable outgoings, put this dollar amount on a third piece of paper. Now subtract your estimated gas and food expenses per month. To live on a budget you MUST not spend more then what remains after gas and food, every month. I hope this helps, it is terribly simplified, but it shure worked for me and my family and friends. |

Try doing a weekly shop one day later each week. And buy supermarket own brand label food instead of the rip off version. Turn your heating down - just one degree will make a difference. And if you have your central heating on a timer - leave it off for half an hour longer perhaps. Draw curtains at night to keep in heat. Make sure you have no draughts coming through. And shop around a bit more for household requirements. Any use??? |
