How do people on minimum wage afford apartments in the UK?
I'm making about £800 a month and am looking to move in to my own flat or apartment as I've been in shared houses over the last few years and fancy a change. But most start at about £350 + before bills and council tax!!! Does anyone know how to get around this as over half my wages on rent seems a bit hefty. Or is this just the reality of trying to get your own place? Thanks!

oh and this flat i found was a one bedroom tiny thing. Anything decent is about £600+ in Manchester anyway

The city council is the only place you are likely to get a flat any cheaper. If the council in Manchester is anything like the council where I live then you have to have a really good reason to get a place and be prepared to live anywhere.

In your case I think, no hope, you wish to move because you fancy a change, that's not a good reason in any council's mind. I only got a flat because the place that I lived in before hand was damp and mould grew all over the place and mushrooms were growing out of the carpet (no joke). I am willing to bet that when I was interviewed by the council housing officer I stank to high heaven, I was offer a place within three weeks. The fact that I was 38 years old and working probably helped me out as well, consider to be more reliable than younger people and not likely to cause any problems (Loud music, parties and the like). The flats that I live in is set a side for the over 30s. Unless you have a really good reason, your stuck.

You will get a 25% discount on your council tax bill if you live on your own. You could try asking the DSS if you are entitled to housing benefit or just apply for it and see what happens.

Thats the reality of living in the UK. If you had dependants you may get help, but it's easier if you are not born British. sorry

get a 15 year old preggers and get a council house. the only way to get your own place these days.

That is the reality of getting your own place. £350 seems dirt cheap...

£350! where on earth is that! my daughter rents a studio and it's £650 and yes it's half of her earnings. That is the reality.

If you want to rent a place on your own on £800 a month your either looking at a studio flat or a bedsit. Even so you are going to be living a hand to mouth existence. I would say stay where you are, save some money and hope the housing market crashes so you can buy a house in the future.

Rent a couple of rooms in a house, maybe a basement or the back of a house (where I live they call these "mother in law apartments" because they are usually an addition made for a widowed mother, she has her own little space).

Anne,

I live in the Bucks commuter belt (line goes directly to Marylebone) and £650 would be exceptional here. Just a quick glance in the local paper this week tells me that an unfurnished flat above a shop (this is with a local agent called Roberts Newby) is between £850 and £1,200pcm (and that's for a 1 bed). If you want anything more than that, you're looking at £1,400+.

This is the most expensive area of the country, outside of W1 - and houses have started selling here for even more than the West End now! It is a rarity that a 4-bed detached goes for under £1m these days, even in these times of falling prices.

Your best bet is to apply for part or full housing benefit, if your a single person apply for council tax benefit as you should be entitled to a 25% discount on it. in addition a lot of private landlords wont accept housing benefit aka DSS so you may want to consider applying to your local authority/council housing department or local housing associations as their rents are way much cheaper and they will take housing benefit.
