How do relate your salary to what kind of house you can afford?
Just want to know.

25% of your monthly income would be a good safe start.

about 3x your yearly income...that's what i did at least...wish i would have followed the advice above me though, a shed (and the payments that go with it) sound great right now.

what i have always done is look at the monthly payment if i can;t pay it with just two paychecks out of four i can;t afford it

muppetkiller_2000
That's pretty subjective. How do you handle debt? Is your job fairly secure? What do you do for a living? How's your credit? Do you pay all your bills, save money, ignore bills, spend too much, or what?

I don't need much and I'm pretty tight. I'm only willing to pay 20 - 25% for housing monthly/annually. I'd rather rent and not mow grass or make repairs. I rent because I don't want upkeep, repairs and headaches.

If I bought a house; all expenditures, taxes, insurance and upkeep would still average 25% of my income because that would allow me to have emergency funds, pay my credit card off monthly, savings and fun money.

Like an Igloo -- it can be here today...and gone tomorrow.

Assess and be comfortable with your ability to manage your financial obligations (with at least a 3 month cushion of funds tucked away) while always reading the fine print.

even if you got enough money to buy anything you want you still want a house that is full of love which you can call home

I've heard it said that your house payment should be one weeks wages. Hope this helps. Any more than that and you'll find your self making cuts on other necessities. This is a good measure to follow to keep you from getting in over your head.

Your income/ debt ratio are considered when selecting a house you can afford.

Never could have done it based on salary.

Bought my houses by other means.

Shed. I'm seriously gonna live in a shed at this rate.

love my baby
I think your payment is supposed to be no more than 25-30% of your salary.

first of all...you make ..........
now how much can you afford each month for a payment......
you have yearly taxes and insurance
phone cable electricity water bills monthly
car fuel and parking expenses
Food..clothing..dues...entertainment.....
Is your job stable...
You need money aside for when the roof leaks..the hotwater tank blows all sorts of things go wrong in a house at times
You need health insurance..dental insurance
you need a substantial amt to put down on the mortgage to keep your payments down...this is just a short list...think on these things and see what you think..do some research...

Normally you are not suppose to spend more than 60% of your income on a monthy payment. If you make $3000 a month then keep your house payment around $1600 Max! Once you get behind on a payment due to other bills, emergencies .....etc...its very hard to get back on your feet!

You should spend no more than 30% of your income on housing. When you go over that amount you are taking a chance. For example if you make $2000 per month then you should spend no more than $600 a month on your housing.

A good rule of thumb is that your home cost no more than 1 1/2 times your annual salary.
