Anonymous | How do you live comfortably on your own when things are so expensive? |
Especially if your young and just finished high school or college. I'm 19 and I'm worried about when I'll be out on my own (even though it won't be for a long while). I mean even if I make $15/hr starting a new career, how do you afford to pay for your house/apartment, phone bill, insurance, food, gas, and taxes? Just the thought of it overwhelms me and when I'm out on my own, I don't want to be broke and have to struggle forever...lol. I'm trying to save as much as I can, I don't make much but still it seems like it's difficult. |

It can be difficult but you can do it.I've lived on my own since I was a teenager and got my first apartment around your age.You have to plan and budget, don't move into a huge apartment, find yourself a small place.Smaller places mean lower power/water/gas bill.Try for a cheap phone service and cut out the cable until you can get yourself going.Save as much as you can and don't go out to eat everyday.I have made it on my own for many, many years and have not always made a lot of money per hour.Live within your means for the time being even if it is not your idea of a wonderful apartment. You'll work your way up.Bigger is not always better :) good luck to you. |

I took the Dave Ramsey course, you could look it up online. He has great suggestions. First step is to have an emergency fund.
One of the things you can do to save on things is to go to garage sales to buy clothes or furniture or even dishes. You can get some great deals.
Some generic brands are just as good as the name brands in food.
Make sure you start a savings account if you do not have one.
Make a budget and stick to it.
Hope some of these tips help and may God Bless you. |

it's all about PLANNING
you will be amazed at how much you can accomplish and how many bucks you can save with adequate planning.
Cut down on things you don't need like "OMG! LIKE I GOTTA GET THOSE NEW PRADA SHOES!"
Ya dig, honey? |

its really hard starting out and being alone but eventually you get settled in and when you start making enough everything starts getting better but it will always be hard starting out |

Im struggling with this question right now myself! I have pretty expensive taste and the economy has definitely made it hard even to survive on your own.
I currenlty rent my own apartment for $725/month (the landlords love me so I talked them down from $1050/month) and that includes all of my utilities. I was able to reduce the rent by agreeing to help them with gardening, house and dog watching. I have a private beach, two bedrooms, washer and dryer...it's great! My best advice is to be picky, look around, and there are still good deals out there!
As far as living day to day, I try to do as much of my shopping at the dollar store as I can prior to going to the grocery store. I try to drive as infrequently as possible and only go out when I have multiple things to get done at once. I look at Goodwill when I feel like I need a shopping spree, and always hit up yard sales on the weekends. I try not to eat out and always pack a lunch to bring to work.
I still barely scrape by but I manage, and the rewards of living on your own are enormous!
Best of luck! |

You don't live "comfortably," you live on a shoestring budget.
You buy things in second-hand/thrift shops and yard/garage sales, you don't spend much on clothes and eating out, you buy a used car that you pay for in cash, you don't take big vacations.
You work a second job to buy those "special things." You get the very cheapest cell phone plan and don't use extra minutes. If you splurge on satellite/cable you only get the cheapest package. |

dont worry it all seems a lot harder than it is. You rent a fairly cheap but nice apartment, get cheap phone company with free internet included. and the others are cheap. a lot of people survive on a lot less than $15/hr so dont worry you'll be fine. If you get into loads of trouble(which you wont) you can get financial support from the goverment.
hope this helped |

It IS difficult - but doable.
I'm old and old fashioned - many of todays neccesities aren't neccessities - they are 'extras' - like cable TV. Here's some old advice....live on a budget and live BELOW your means and save extra money for hard times....and STICK TO IT....and that's it.

Its going to be tough at first because you are use to living with somebody maybe your parents I think you should put it off for a little bit and save a little more money up so when you get out there you would have a safety net Good luck with whatever you choice may be |

Can you double up with someone or go back home long enough to build a small nest egg?
It really is a struggle to pay all the bills and rent and enjoy yourself. There are free things to do out there and there are websites on frugal living.
Be prepared to have to turn down some invitations if it means lots of money out of pocket.
Many people live this way their entire lives. At your age it is not unusual. Most of us scrimped and saved in order to get ahead.
This economy is tough on us all. Imagine supporting a family and a home and being let go in a declining job market. Things are tough. You might consider renting a room in a large house and keeping expenses as low as possible.
Check local college for cheap rent and room mates.
