Most places you have to give them written notice 30 days prior to when you want to move out, otherwise they will extend your lease month-to-month.
Check your rental agreement though. |

What normally happens is that 3 - 4 months before your contract runs out, the letting agency or landlord will send you through a legal document saying that they intent to take possession of the property again as soon as the contract date runs out. They have to do this, so if you stay past your contract end date, they can legally evict you. They will also usually ask if you want to renew your contract for another year.
If you don't wish to renew the contract, then you are usually expected to leave and clear the property (as well as handing the keys back) on the last day of the contract. They will normally do a walk round the property with you on the last day to check the condition, so they can decide whether or not to give you your full desposit back, checking for damage and how clean the property is, as well as all the fixtures and fittings that were there when you moved in are still there.
If its got to 3 months before the end of the contract, and they haven't contacted you, its a good idea to contact them to let them know you are moving out, and arrange to your possessions to be moved on or before the last day of the contract. |

well depending on how long you have been in the rented property depends how you handle it. as a general rule if you pay rent monthly you give them a minimum of a months notice, if you pay weekly you give them a minimum of a weeks notice. but if you can give them more time then its perfectly acceptable to do so so they can get the property back on the market. |

Check your Agreement for any special clauses, but generally if your agreement is for a fixed term (eg. six months), you can leave on the last day of the fixed term without giving notice. In your position I would be looking for a new home some weeks before the agreement ended, so that I was in a position to give at least a couple of weeks notice of non-renewal (1 month would be even better). if you havent sorted out your end of things, ie another place then dont bother telling them till thats sorted. You can break your tennancy usually before the end of contract by giving them 2 months notice, although id wait till a couple of weeks or so before hand as you still have to pay rent, a deposit at the start of your tennancy can pay for your last months rent, and you dont want people moving in before your ready. They cant really do much about it if you want to leave, and this isnt always a smooth process, so generally they should be considerate. |

You must end your agreement properly if you want to leave. If you don't you may still be liable to pay rent, even after you've moved out. To do this, you usually have to give written notice to the landlord. You may not be able to end the agreement early if you have signed for a tenancy for a fixed period of time.
