How do you set up utilities?
Im getting my first apartment and the utilities are not included. Where do I go to get them? Should the apartment have that info or do I have to set everything up myself? Do I just look in the yellow pages and find someone there?

Your apartment landlord or leasing office should have a list of people that service your building. For gas, water, electricity there will probably only be one company for each. For things like cable, telephone service, internet, etc, you might be able to choose which company you use if you're in a larger more populated area. You call them, tell them where and when you are moving, and they will ask you when you want your service to start. If you're in an apartment, you might just have to transfer the old service into your name. Water, cable, etc. they can hook up when you're not home, but other things you will have to be there to meet the service person for. Some places might require deposits before they set up service or pre-payment.

Go to the utility company or call them and be prepared to give them all kinds of information like birth certificate or driver license , social security, 2 or 3 bills that are address to your home. And then you should be ready to go.

The same utility companies serve all apartments in a complex. Contact the apartment management and get a list of who to contact for phone, water, electricity, natural gas, etc.
The yellow pages will not tell you which utility serves your apartment. You could also ask one of your new neighbors.

You'll have to find out who your local utility providers are.
The super might help you.

Or goto the local chamber of commerce they will be happy to help and will most likely have the correct phone numbers.

You might need depending on where you live

Electricity
Gas
Water/sewerage
cable/dish
phone
garbage disposal

Most always your new landlord will give you that info or include it in your move in packet that is given to you when signing the lease.

Ask your landlord. Sometimes water is included or done through their company. For everything else they will know who you should call, just stop by the office or call.

Look in the yellow pages or check with your landlord/rental office. They should have the numbers of the places you need to call. You have to call and get your apt set up in your name/ssn.

Look in the front of the phone book normally. You will call the phone company, the electric company, and maybe the cable and gas company. If you get to lost, ask anyone in the apartments. As a first time user, do not be surprised if the electric and phone company want a deposit

Your apartment complex will give you a sheet with the electric, gas and phone companies that service your area. You can't just go through the phone book because only certain companies service area.

You will call the companies. The electric and gas will typically just come on because they do that over the computer. A home phone and cable will require a technician to come to your apartment.
