Area= length x width [for square & rectangular shapes]
4 different ways of measuring:
1. Carpet Area: available covered area of house- measure length & width of all rooms, corridors, bath, kitchen etal for each floor individually and add up
2. Covered Area: Total covered area including walls. measure the outside of built up portion minus open spaces within if any for each floor individually and add up
3. Plinth Area: Total land Area within the constructed portion including open spaces, staircase, etal
4. Total Area: Total land Area including lawn-- measure the plot and work out the total area |

measure each room in feet and inches and multiply .example ten feet x ten feet =100 sq feet divide by three =33.3 sq yards, add all rooms together giving total sq footage or yards, this info should be on your title deeds |

Multiply the lenght by the width of the base of the two levels and add it up. This would give a general idea of the total footage. To get the exact amount of floor-space, you'll have to check the area of each room ( lenght by width ) and add it all up. |

The best way is to use the blueprint of the house if it is available. Alternatively, you can get an approximation in several ways. One way is to measure each room, hallway and closet. Another way is to measure the outside dimensions of the house and calculate the area for the top and bottom portions.
You also have to decide which square footage you want. You can include all space under the roof, or you can measure only the air-conditioned (living) space, and exclude garages, unfinished basements, or covered porches.
Finally, you can hire a surveyor or engineer to do the measuring for you. |

Do you need this for floor area or for rebuilding costs (for insurance cover)?
Whichever it is, the answer is fairly obvious - either measure all floors and multiply the breadth by the length of each area and sum the figures or check the external measurements of the building and multiply (include the difference in size between the stories).
If it is for rebuild costs check a website to get the final figure. |

measure north wall to south wall, east wall to west wall and multiply those two numbers and there is your square footage |

Because the bottom story is larger than the top story, you simply measure them seperately and add the two together. Measure the outside distance of the house, excluding the garage and multiply the width X length. Do this for both the bottom and the top of the house. Then add them together for total square footage. |
