It depends on the owner of the property. I've had some that let you pay by check. However, I've had others that would would only accept cashiers check. You need to ask the apartment manager. I've noticed lately cashiers check is most popular. At some banks there is a fee for requesting a cashiers check. So ask the apartment manager if money order is also acceptable. Money orders are free. You can get one from the post office when you give them cash for the amount. However, paying by personal check is best if this option is available because its cheaper, hassle free, and the transaction is recorded at your bank for record keeping.
Note: Be sure that you are definitely moving in to an apartment before getting a cashiers check or money order because they will be made out to the payee (apartment property). This means if things fall through and you don't end up living there you can not take the cashiers check or money order back and get your cash back. |

We usually require that the security deposit be in the form of a money order or cashier's check and submitted with the lease application form and fee. Since we do not do property management, the security deposit is made payable to the property owner
The pet deposit is payable on move-in payable by personal check to the property owner.
Many apartment complexes will accept personal checks so long as they are from local banks.
I would be very wary of requests for security deposits in cash. |

Usually it's a money order or personal check. Always get receipts for whatever you pay them, so that there is a record. |

It can be done different ways..by direct debit from bank cash or cheque...I advise you get reciepts for all...I would tend to have back up proof through bank and cheque...

As long as you get a receipt cash is fine, if cheque though be prepared to wait for it to clear before proceeding with your move. |

i think it will depend on what the landlord wants,, but basically make sure you get a lease, take someone with you that is not anything to do with it, and can sign as a witness, and make sure you get a set of keys. That is before you part with the cash, ,,, i have two kids who went to college. On other hand he will want to know you can pay, and you will not trash his property, so have a referee, the landlord has probably been done a million times before. |

Typically you give them a check (often a cashiers check from the bank or a money order, some take a personal check) for first, and security (2 months rent)all at once with your first payment. Some charge first, last and security (3 months rent). Sometimes the security dep is lower than a whole months rent. |

Betz , is correct, the deposit has to be held by a third party. Never give it direct to the landlord.
This has been the law in the UK for over a year now. |

I think there is some sort of scheme that landlords have to comply with now regarding deposits. Basically it stops them taking the deposit and spending it, and then not being able to return it at the end of your tenancy. |

A check! Never pay cash to anybody. You need have a trail of transaction. All the rent, deposit and any payment should be paid with checks. |

I always just wrote a personal check.
If you pay cash, make sure you get a receipt that clearly shows how much you paid and what it was paid for.
Its up to the landlord to decide what payment methods to accept. |

Really, money orders. Alot of people use money orders to pay bills and things like that so they can keep a record in case the bill collector or landlord tries to deny payment! |
