How good must my credit score be to get approved for a major loan? I'm looking to buy a house...?

A MIDDLE SCORE of 680 will fair well. And yes this is the best time to buy. It is truly a buyers market if there ever was one....major lenders are jumping hoops to get the 1.2 million foreclosures off their books.

Word of advice: once you've chosen the home of your dreams make sure that an inspection is done to ensure you're not investing in a money pit. There is an epidemic of manufacturing of meth in abandon homes. The chemicals can penetrate the walls of a home making it uninhabitable.

Good hunting

depends on what you mean by major loan. I will say this, you want at least a 680 and anywhere between 3-20% of the sales price to put down.

Get a copy of your credit report (AnnualCreditReport.com). Dispute any errors. If you have any derogatory items, start working on settling them. Start with the newest and work back to the oldest. Mortgage companies will require you settle all negative items. Might as well start now.

Before you start house hunting, find out what price range your income can handle. Don't buy more house than you can really afford. Use the old rule of thumb: house payment no more than 25% of your monthly income.

depends. you can have 580 with no late payment for the last two years and good income that can be verified.
620 with good income and everything current.
now it's the best time to buy if you know that you can afford it and your situation is stable...the price is at all time low as well as interest rates.

The higher the score the better. A good score is somewhere in the low 600 to mid 700. and all that will do for you is lower the interest rate. If it is lower you will pay higher interest rates. But the credit score is not the only thing that will allow you to buy a house.

The credit score is a relative index and is usually just one of the inputs for a bank to decide on whether you fulfill: [1] the eligibility for a (housing) loan and [2] what should be the amount of loan that can be offered to you, and [3] at what rate of interest.

Different banks have different criteria in evaluating loan applications.

If you have had a sufficiently clean credit record and there has not been any major default (previous loans, if any, and credit card payments, etc) on your part in the past, then you're surely going to get the loan sanctioned and approved to you. Also, another indicator is your current net (take-home) salary and the bank will also like to evaluate how much you can afford to pay as installments, based on the loan amount that you have applied.

These days your credit score is not everything. Your income and how long you have been employed are the most important. Good luck , hope you get your loan.

620 is ok but 680 or higher will get you farther
