How long do i have to reinvest my money from selling my home before having to pay capital gains?

glenn
If you are in the US and this was your home- you probably never have to reinvest.

In the US if it was an investment property and you are using the 1031 tax deferment then you have an extremely short window and really need to hire a service to help you.

If you sold at a profit you have to pay on the profit, reinvest or not.

real estate guy
I assume this is your primary residence.

The OLD!! law was that you had to reinvest. In the 90's this law was changed. There is NO reinvestment requirements.

The first 250,000 net profit (single) or $500,000 married on the property is TAX FREE. And you can do ANYTHING you want with the money. Assuming that you have lived in the property for the past 2 of 5 years. Anything over these amounts are taxed.
