Why do you want to know that? Need to know how long you have to scrape some money together? Best thing if you are getting into $$$ troubles is to call your lender right away, they'd rather work with you for you to keep your house, instead of foreclosing on it. But I think about 3 months of missed payments and they would start some proceedings.
I've attached a couple of links regarding the foreclosure process. Legally, it varies from state to state.

Once your mortagage payment becomes 90 days past due foreclosure proceedings can begin. I believe it takes aprox. 18 months to finish the proceedings.

people saying 6 months are generous. It is usually 3 months and they file the papers.

It varies state by state. In New York after 3 months or missed payments you will get a notice of default which is recorded with the county clerk and put in newspapers. The notice will state will you must do to correct the default. If nothing is done by the stated due date then the lender will sue you in court as New York is a judicial foreclosure state. They will ask the the court for permission to sale the property at auction to recoup there losses. The whole process in New York can take 12-18 months but do let it get this far. Call the lender immediately. Try to workout something. As previously stated. Banks don't like to foreclose as it is costly. Good luck and God Bless.

Depends on how proactive the bank is. Some will start the foreclosure program after the 2nd or 3rd miss unless they are still talking with you, trying to work things out - and still think they may be able to catch you up (even with a slim hope). Others will wait 6 months or more (especially if the house is government insured and they know they will get their money back anyhow - they why hurry, its the tax payers taking the hit).
Still, it cold take another 6 months (or even years in some situations) to run through the foreclosure process.

not to many 6 and your done for

how about you stop wasting your money and spend it on the things you need.

I've seen 'em take a long time to foreclose but the one I'm trying to buy right now sets the record (for me). The owner hasn't paid a note in TWO YEARS. He's repeatedly asked the lender to just foreclose and be done with it, and they still haven't done it!

I think its 6 months before they start papework and then usually up to a year before foreclosure. Good luck don't let it get that far. Talk to them and work something out.

ive seen them go on for 6 months or more

Why should it matter?
If you skip one payment then your credit is already in the hole.
