LauraJay | How much do you have to earn to rent a property for £850 a month? |
I've found a great flat to rent for £850 a month. I was just wondering how much our income would have to be for them to accept our application on it? (I'm going to rent it with my boyfriend so they'll be two incomes) |

Well, I reckon it would have to be over £850 a month. |

Wow.... for that price it had better be Great !... You could always rent out my house for £849.00 per month.... !!
You need to have combined incomes of around the 40k mark. That will easily cover the rent, but still give you plenty to enjoy yourselves. |

you could buy a place for that money |

Yikes..that sounds a bit steep..is it furnished? I'm sure it's really lush for that money.
You have to work it out by looking at all the out-goings...not just rent, but food, council tax, utilities, phone and then allow spare cash to save,, going out money, clothes, treats and vices!
Plus you may want to buy things to furnish the flat out.
Then you have to plan for future expenses such as MOT, Car Tax, holidays etc. Always a good idea to have at least a month in advance of rent saved just incase.
I know what it's like when you fall in love with a new place to live...just make sure you are going to be able to afford it. Good luck. |

Sensibly you should pay 1/3 rent, 1/3 bills and 1/3 food. But if you have two incomes it should be ok.
However, buying is cheaper than renting. |

Depends what other out goings you have really. You need to remember the following:
Gas = £30 month
Elec = £30 month
C/Tax = £70 - £120 month
Water = £49 month
TV = £10 (licence)
Then there's food, travel and clothes and going out!
To be honest though i have a 3 bed semi and only pay £710 a month for my mortgage....why don't you just buy somewhere either together or buy it yourself and get the B/F to pay half.
At the end of the day the application process will decide if you can afford it or not but please remember that they WANT to sign you up so will push your finances to the limit to accept you. You should really be the one to decide if you can afford it or not. Also remember that you might need money in the bank for emergencies or one off costs like car repairs.
In my experience you are better having a smaller/less expencive pad and money to have a life rather than a posh house but no money to go out with!!

for that sort of money you should look into buying a house. you can get a mortgage cheaper than that. but for rent at 850 a month i would reckon you would need atleast 2000 a month by the time you pay rent, council tax, electric etc |

Remember you have council tax and bills on top.
For the two of you, you both want to be clearing a TOTAL (combined) £2000 a month for this. |

850 a month is cheap, i cant believe you people think its not.
Cant afford to buy in London as a simple one bed flat is £250,000.
if you live outside of london you've got it easy |
